how do i get ds to flush the toilet

DS 3.5 knows perfectly well he should flush the toilet and wash his hands after going to the toilet. He is lazy and won't without constant nagging. When he was first nappy trained he did it all no problem. Now the novelty seems to have worn off and its a constant battle - especially since he is now lying and telling me he has when he hasn't. Any ideas gratefully recieved

cant really offer any help, we're not at that stage yet...ds is 2 and still revels in sneaking into the bathroom to flush toilet over and over again and wash his hands until a full tank of hot water has been wasted .

i suppose you will just have to keep re-inforcing how important it is?

I'd like to know the answer to this too...for DS1+2 and sometimes even DH

I have four sons and they never flush. The best advice I was given for toilet training so many boys was to buy a yellow carpet

If anyone has a tip which actually works, let me know. I have 3 here, who invariably forget unless I shout at them (and guess who forgets to wash their hands too??) - actually, make that 4 as dh forgets occasionally too.

When all my kids were younger I used to get them to chant or sing 'Flush, flush, flush, wash, wash, wash, dry, dry, dry' every time they used the loo. It sounds ridiculous but it did help to enforce the whole flushing and handwashing routine.

Still trying to work out how to ensure my 10yr old flushes it, I now charge him 10p every time someone else has to flush it.
this has had dramatic effects.
With a youger child you could try a star chart?
There is another way with a ping pong ball, which will not flush. You can tell him he gets a big treat if he can manage to flush the ping pong ball away, this turned ds into a flushaholic, for a while but did work quite well!
