Poor eye contact in 2.3yr old

My ds1 has really poor eye contact with anyone outside of his immediate family - he'll interact really well with his siblings and us but when i went to get him from nursery today one of the staff (his key worker) commented that she'd deliberately concentrated on him all day and he hadnt made eye contact once with her. He's also quite slow at speaking but his understanding is excellent. i think she was trying to insinuate that there was something wrong with him. i have had concerns myself - he rarely copies words youu say and has never tried to sing a nursery rhyme but i just presumed he'd grow out of it. any avice welcome!

my DS (now just turned 3) has never been too good with eye contact... very slow in speaking as well, I mentioned it to Health visitor and he has seen a paediatrician, now has a Special needs teacher who he sees every fortnight, she works with his nursery as visiting us at home

IMO he is just in his own little world, some kids are and they just snap out of it, my brother was the same, its usually boys!

Speak to your HV, generally you are told not to worry until they are 3, but its worth raising concerns now to get the ball rolling.

Does he communicate needs by other means (eg pointing?)

thanks cattymum - he does try and speak at home and points appropriately but just wont speak to anyone else. my dp refuses to acknowledge that things might not be right - he just thinks he's criminally shy - he wasnt pleased the last time i raised it with the hv. my ds1 is due for an assessment anytime soon so i'll be able to raise it there. you just know as a mother when things are not right. thanks again
