Because im buggered if i do?! Its a new thing, he usually loves bath time and starts trying to get his clothes off when he hears/sees it running, but for the last few days he has refused to sit down and crys when i ask him or try to get him to sit down. It is making the whole bath time thing very tricky. Anyone elses done this? He is nearly 18mths by the way.

does he have a sore bottom? when DS is teething he gets bad nappy rash from acidic poos, and the bath water stings. Or maybe he's bruised it and it hurts to sit on a hard bath bottom?

TrinityRhino · 24/01/2007 19:46

dd2 did this at about the same age
It was hell for a couple of weeks but I was not prepared to let her stand up so I told her and told her tried to get her to sit down and then told her that if she didn't she would come out
so she stayed standing, I removed her from the bath

she kicks off I say you have to sit downput her back in she sits for a second then satnds up I take her out

repeat until end of bath ort she sits down
now 3 months on she sometimes stands up but sits as soon as I ask her to

chocolatebirdy · 24/01/2007 19:47

His bottom appears fine and he is happy to sit anywhere else, but then i suppose he does have a bit of padding with his nappy?

Hmm. Will he sit on the bathroom floor or anywhere else WITHOUT the nappy on?

If he wont, I would guess he has bruised his bum like Clairemow suggested.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/01/2007 20:05

DS was like this for a while. He was just 'busy' playing.

mamama · 24/01/2007 20:07

DS (16 months) always stands in the bath. Don't know why, I'd never really thought about it, it's just what he does. He's usually busy playing - he likes to wade up and down and fill cups with water. He sometimes crawls around too, but rarely sits. I never actually thought to get him to sit down!

chocolatebirdy · 24/01/2007 20:08

Im not sure as other than the bath he always has it on, will give it a few days and try not to make a huge issue out of it and hope that his little botty will stop hurting soon. If he still wont sit down then i will have to assume that he really is just being "a pain in the bum"!

Good Gawd, my dd does this!!
She used to love sitting in the bath, then we had a period of only wanting to stand.
She's now 15 months old, if I full the bath quite high (obviously watching her all the time) then she'll sit and splash.
Now she just wont get out the bath!

Miaou · 24/01/2007 20:10

Mine too vvv! He much prefers to stand up, so that he can reach the toy bag which is hung up on the wall. I stay within reach to catch him if he falls (only I missed tonight ) and have non-slip mats the full length of the bath. I chuck water over him with a cup to wash him but let him get on with it. After about three/four weeks of standing up most of the time, he is now about 50/50 standing/sitting.

chocolatebirdy · 24/01/2007 20:11

He has always sat in bath, may crawl around to get toys or stand up to reach something he isnt allowed, but then sat straight back down. Think he must have a reason for refusing to sit atall as he gets very upset when i tell him too. Hope it is just a case of bruised bum!

Why is it a problem? I went through this with DS (3.11) when around 18 month mark. I would let him stand up to play, making sure he had his hands inside the bath when pouring water to avoid spills. Then I just poured water over him with a jug before soaping and to rinse. I would wash him just before I intended to get him out so he wouldn't get cold. I can't remember when it stopped but now he prefers to lie down in the water and has done for ages. DD (2.1) has been standing in the bath for about 6 months although sometimes sits or lies down for a couple of minutes. I'm sure she'll grow out of the standing phase too. In the meantime, it's quite useful because there isn't enough room for both of them to lie down without squabbling and it's so much more convenient and fun to bath them together.

franca70 · 24/01/2007 20:18

Both ds and dd went through same stage at around that age. a mix of busy playing and not wanting their hair washed

karabiner · 24/01/2007 20:18

DS did this too. We just let him stand up, it seemed to be a phase and suddenly he wanted to sit down again and enjoyed his baths. Think it lasted about 4 months.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/01/2007 20:20

Ah, both my two have chipped front teeth from me trying to get them to sit down in the bath and them slipping.

TrinityRhino · 26/01/2007 09:46

oh god I sopund awful on this thread now. my first instinct was to let her stand but even with a non slip bath mat in the bath and me watching her like a hawk she did keep walking up and down the bath, sometimes jumping and she had slipped about 6 times in the first few minutes (righted herself most of the time, needed catching to prevent bashing head on tiled wall or bath a couple of times). I just couldn't cope with the thought of her smashing her head on the side of the bath so made her stop. maybe if she had stayed standing still I wouldn't have stopped it, I dunno

snowleopard · 26/01/2007 10:03

Another one here. DS had a phase of it a few months ago (I think he just couldn't get enough of the novelty of standing) and then went back to sitting; but the last few baths he's been at it again. We just let him stand and play (with rubber bathmat) until the end of the bath, when we tell him it's time to sit / lie down for a wash, which he has a strop about but we just get it done quickly.

doggiesayswoof · 26/01/2007 10:11

Dd did this about 18-20 months. She used to wade up and down and play with all the shampoo bottles etc. I just put down a rubber bath mat and made a game out of it really, then washed her at the end with a jug. She did slip but only a couple of times. She grew out of it in a couple of months.

HellyMnelly · 26/01/2007 10:35

DS does this too. He's 19 months now and has been doing it for about a month. Also hates having his hair washed and can be a bit suspicious of having his body washed too. He likes toddling around in the bath, falls over sometimes but it doesn't seem to bother him too much, as long as his hair doesn't get wet. The only way he sits down is if he slips and goes into a sitting position or if DH comes in and tells him to sit down to be like daddy in the bath.

bobsi · 26/01/2007 13:46

Me too - dd is 16 months and has been standing for about 2 months now!!!
