DS 2.7 just had 47min tantrum ....

DS 2 years & 7.5months just had his record yet of tantrums. Over 45mins .....

Is that normal?

I was calm, tried the soft approach, he repeatedly hit me. I put him in time out, just carried on.

I then took myself away & then he just went on & on, fist thumping, screaming & yelling.

Is it normal? How does everyone else deal with tantrums that long & this age?

Yeah it's normal, I think they can just wind themselves up sometimes and find it hard to calm down was he tired? DS flips when he's tired

sounds gorensous - it sounds like you handled it really well though.

My daughter could have them 3-4 times a day lasting approx an hour EACH time! Nothing seemed to work, then when she was 3 she told us she wouldn't be doing that anymore...and didn't! Good luck, it will pass in time

One piece of advice that I find helpful is to name their emotion and why they're upset. Eg. You're really angry because you can't have the lolly. You really want the lolly. You don't want to say goodbye lolly etc etc. Have you tried this?

Yes we've had them last a good hour sometimes. I've found ignoring the best option for the angriest stage then distraction is the best way to deal when he's slightly calmer. If I try and talk to him he just gets angrier. The joys of a toddler!

I think I need to be more patient & let him get on with it, trying to calm him down makes him even more livid!

This actual episode was over me saying no to taking the glass kettle with a plug on outside to play in his sandpit!

My 18 month old DS has starter with mini dramas, wailing if I say no to things like him eating sand or putting his wet hands on an electric socket, or I won't let him drink the water from the bird bath like the birds do. It can result in sobbing & throwing himself on the floor. Ignoring works then very quiet talking when the sobbing stops, then distraction.

At 18 months he also was exactly how you explain too .... A year on and we've gone up 10 notches!!!
