4 year old swearing

Hi
My DS (4) when angry says "you stupid, idiot, bum, fart, pooh, fucking" etc
How on earth do I get him to stop (esp. Fucking)

My husband and I don't swear, we do say stupid but it is directed at things not people!

When he first said the f-word we told him off and so he uses it to provoke us along with other words he know we don't like. I've tried ignoring him but when he is angry he still says it sometimes.

In general he does like to provoke a reaction with things like jumping from the stairs in front of me when he knows he isn't allowed or taking my mobile without asking and then showing me he's got it.

But I've been ignoring for a while and he still says it. Please help if you have been able to nip it in the bud. Thanks.

You need to find out where he is hearing it and either remove him from that situation or find a way to deal with the source.

Where is he hearing it?

The first thing I would have said is ignoring him if you react to it he will soon stop using the word.

Perhaps take away a favourite toy and tell him why you are taking it away.

As well as ignoring the swearing, are you praising the times he uses language you like?
"Oh DS, I love hearing you use your nice words" etc. Over egg the pudding a bit for a while.
Consistent message that nice/polite words get you loads of attention and rude ones get you none.

Where does a four year old hear language like that?

I think with the f word he heard from some older boys hanging around outside our house. I think we made it a problem though because when he repeated it we told him off and have highlighted it for him parenting fail

Well you can't change the past now so no use kicking yourself over it.
Pay attention to the behaviour you do want, praise praise praise. Kids will take attention from anywhere so give the positive attention to positive behaviour and the negative should die off

Well my daughter who is in reception has picked up the word pissing from school. I don't feel as though I can prevent them from ever hearing swear words or inappropriate words from other places. When out and about they may well hear it. I'm looking for ways to prevent him saying it himself.

Yes I think I should over exaggerate praise when he uses good words.

I've tried giving words he can use like "silly billy" or saying he can make up a word for when he is angry. He has used it a few times. Let's see how he gets on.
