Speech at 22 months

My 22 month old dd has been assessed by peadiatrics for ASD. They are con concerned that she might be facing a ASD diagnosis in the future.

She is my fourth child. One of her brothers has ASD and is non verbal. One brother has a language disorder and dyspraxia.

I know what ASD is and I honestly wasn't worried about her ( mind you I wasn't extremely worried about her brother with ASD at her age)

She can say a few words, down, cuggle ( cuddle) daddy, juice, more, no, yes

She can request and sound out ( intone but not get the words right ) for three songs.

Is this delayed? I think it's maybe low end of normal.

ASD does tend to present quite differently in girls, than in boys. It's quite unusual for girls to be diagnosed at an early age.
Re speech - if you are comparing with "average expectations for age" then yes, you would be expecting more than that at 22 months.
OTOH, there are lots of dc that don't have that much speech at 22 months, and don't have ASD.

Yes it has thanks. I just need to hear that even if she has few words it's not outside the bounds of normal.

She spends a lot of time with her brother who just doesn't talk at all. I'm hoping there's a bit of copying in here somewhere. I might be grasping at straws.

at 22 months it is not so much what they say, but what they understand, how they certain repetitive behaviours etc. But you ready know that.

What makes them think she may have ASD?

My first said nothing at 22 months. My second did what yours does.

Both in the realms of normal and NT. What prompted the paeds assessment?

The '2 year check' they do has in most areas been moved to look at children when they are nearer 2 and a half. I'm told this is because a significant number of children were marked as having speech issues at 2 but by 2 and a half most of them had caught up and didn't need any extra help. I think it's recognised now that a fair number of dc don't have much verbal communication at 2.

All other things being equal it wouldn't concern me at the moment especially if her understanding is ok.

Nursery told me that they was going to call early years as dd wasn't interacting with adults or children as she should be and her language is delayed.

Weirdly they didn't / don't seem to proactive with my ASD non verbal boy. I thought they was panicking due to her brother and family history of ASD.

My other boy has a Lang disorder and a statement. So as soon as the nursery told me I went to the GP and asked for a pead referral. GP was not concerned - but referred me due to family history.

So honestly I had no concerns until I walked out of the pears room. She has reffered to portage, early years, salt. It's being seriously

I think dd has good eye contact, pead does not. ASD toddler can have good eye contact but on his terms. He an stare into my eyes inches from my face for prolonged periods of time - or he can ignore people totally
