Talking babies

I have got my 4 month old mimicing sounds I make, I say Boo and he says Boo. I say lalal and he says lalala - and today I went to a mother and baby group and I SWEAR a 7 month old said "hello" to my baby.

Can anyone shed light on this?

nope, unless I'm more sleep deprived than I thought...

Um, I think they're meant to copy the sounds they hear - it's practice. My DD has been saying "e-oh" for a while, which lots of people have commented on ("your baby just said "hello"). She also looks at me sometimes and says "mama", which I have to say I put down to luck and timing, rather than fabulous linguistic abilities. Yesterday she said "nana" when I offered her a banana, so things are progressing I hope.
I read a report about a study which claimed that mothers who believe their babies are saying things are often right. I was talking clearly at 9 months, so it is not beyond the realms of possibility that a baby could begin trying to say words months before then.
My sister also swears blind that her DD said "that would be lovely" when she and her husband were talking about having a cup of tea! My niece was then only about 4 months, so this may be a little far fetched... Although if that study was right, then my niece was just joining in!

Be thankful that your 4 month old is not getting the training that my 20 week dd is. Her biggest brother (17y) has taught her to blow raspberries (sp?). I have pointed out to him that this is less than convenient as she does it while BF. He thought that was a great bonus. I dread to think what he will try to get her to do next

My big brother (14 years older than me) taught me, "ears, eyes, nose, mouth, tits", pointing out relevant body parts and lifting my vest at the end!
