7 week old baby straining but not constipated

Please help, my 7 week old son is constantly straining and crying in pain as if constipated but when he does a poo it's soft. Even trying to pass wind from his bum seems to hurt.

I have tried cooled boiled water and HV told me to try infacol (he's been taking that for 6 days now). HV kept telling me he's maybe still learning how to do the toilet but he seems too much in pain and unsettled to me.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. X

We give ds one bottle a day of comfort formula and occasionally milupa baby tea. I think Hipp do both in the UK. Anyway seems to be working for us.

Thank you for your reply. I meant to also say he's on aptimil which is supposed to be really good and very like breastmilk. He cries and cries until he does a poo then he's such a happy baby but he can go a day and a half sometimes without doing the toilet but strains as if he's trying! X

Mine are both on aptamil too. We can't get aptamil comfort here but I did get someone to bring some over and it has the same effect as the comfort formula I use.

Paediatrician said look for one with a natural fibre in it and a reduced lactose content so aptamil comfort and Hipp comfort are good. I use one called frisolac and give it the second feed of the day. I also use Dr Brown's bottles but have to use a nuk one with the frisolac because it's too thick even on the fastest teet.

Also, ds has an umbilical hernia so that causes some of the discomfort and apparently comfort formula will help with this too.

My little girl has had this problem. She doesn't go for ages and is straining like she wants to, when she does go there is loads of it!! The HV suggested cartoned/bottled/pre made stuff instead of powder for a few feeds, not sure why but she said it always gets things moving. It worked too!

Great I'll give that a try. He has his 6 week check tomoz so I'll bring it up to the Dr and see what he has to say.
