Toilet training at 18 months? Surely not?

DD is (not quite) 18 months. For a couple of months now she's been really interested in the toilet and asks to sit on it after I've gone (which I've let her do, still fully clothed, but she pretends to go and 'wipes' and washes her hands after )

For the last couple of weeks she's been telling me in advance when she's about to poo. To begin with I thought she was just playing, but every time she's been right. (She actually says she needs changed, so I check - she's clean - two minutes later, she's had a poo - every time!).

Surely it's too early to start toilet training? I'm in no rush to start by the way, it just seems that she is! The last thing I want to do is to set her back or put her off the whole thing by introducing it too early, or conversely, by not encouraging it if she's ready and willing . Maybe I should play it low key and if she keeps this up give it a go when the warmer weather starts? if it ever does

Any thoughts/experiences gratefully received!

If she's happy to use a potty, i would let her, it will save you a nappy! She might not catch on as quickly with weeing though.

DD was trained at 2 years and 3 days , she had a little friend who was in pants soon after 18 months

Just let her use the toilet if she is asking to go saves you wiping a pooey bum

My kids were both out of nappies by the time they were 18 months - and they weren't unusual for that time (mid 90s). No training - they just knew they needed to go.

She might not be ready to ditch the nappies completely, but you can do a no stress approach of just letting her sit on the loo as its convenient, and popping her on when she says. I did that with ds, and it worked really well

GD was like your dd, 18 mths and showing interest.
We followed along like Dribbler suggested, it was an easy and successful transition.

Dd2 was 18 months when she started using the loo of her own volition, so I also introduced a potty and she was so quick to learn. I still used nappies at night for about 6 months though.

I think it was pretty common when I was a kid (70s baby) as we were all in horrid cloth nappies. I think all of us were toilet trained by 18months.

My mum is utterly horrified by the re emergence of cloth nappies 😜

I had an early 90s baby mum insisted she should be trained by 18 months she wasnt but if a toddler is showing interest then why not

My Dd was 18 months when she chose one day to sit and use my Ds's potty (he was 3). She never had another daytime accident, and was out of night nappies well before her 2nd birthday. Even my Ds, who has ASD was pretty reliable before he was 3 and would use the potty willingly (the toilet was upstairs in the house).

Why not try her in pull ups during the day? If she is showing interest you should encourage her to use the potty.

Let her do it, that's great. My ds is trained for poos since 10 months, he's 16months now, not having dirty nappies is fab!
