Obsessed with penis already

My 20 month old son is constantly playing with his three piece suite. He's obviously fascinated with it and enjoys it.

He shoves his hand down his nappy at night too. I wouldn't mind but it means that he shifts the nappy around and he piddles on his pyjamas and bed every night.

Should I just ignore it? Should I matter of factly persuade him not to do it? When do I introduce the notion that it's a private activity and not for public viewing?

Lots of small children do this, so I wouldn't worry too much. With the wet beds, I'd talk t him about it in appropriate language for his age and explain that when he plays with his nappy, it makes the bed wet - he doesn't understand the cause and effect without it being spelt out. Then offer a reward for a dry bed - something small he can have straight away when he wakes up so the connection is clear. A sticker or whatever he's into. If the bed is wet, don't make a big fuss, just be matter of fact 'oh dear, wet bed this morning, so no X, let's just try tomorrow night.' And remind him of the deal at bed time.

can you shove him back in an all-in-one sleepsuit (for night time)?

penis fondling is perfectly normal

can't remember at what age I managed to persuade ds that it was a private activity but I have a feeling he was more like 3 than 2

my ds started this at about 7mths, giggling whilst fiddling in the bath/ paddling pool. i find it quite amusing as it's obviously nice and ticklish! he's not got as far as going down the nappy though (only 13mths currently).

may be a comfort thing at night. can you give him something else as a 'comforter' - a teddy that feels nice or a ball to hold.

justJAM · 06/01/2007 13:01

don't men still do this for comfort???

Oops don't know how double post happened.

DS is 6 1/2 mths and doing it! I think the bigger a deal you make of it, the more of an issue it'll become.
