My 6 month old is so clingy is this normal??

My dd is just over 6 months old and is extremely clingy,

she screams every time I leave the room or even if I am in the same room but have put her down - it doesnt make a difference its the same whether in high chair, bouncy chair or on mat on the floor.

She has now started doing it when someone else holds her eg. grandma and even daddy sometimes!

Is this normal at this age and will she grow out of it?

becksmummy: I think this is normal. It sounds like classic separation anxiety.

Your DD has just got to the age where she's worked out that you're separate person, and that therefore she could lose you. Scary stuff!

My ds1 was never that bad, but ds2 (nearly same age as your dd) is a bit like that. THe books generally seem to claim that attachment anxieties start around 9 months.... hhmn. I've noticed with ds2 though that he panicks when not in my arms when there are lots of people in the room, whereas he can be calmish with one other person at a time. Does that help at all? And yes, you know, they grow out of everything eventually - you've just got to hope it's at 15 months, not 15 years.

I read the same thing about seperation anxiety starting at 9 months which is why I wanted to check that this was normal.

Its good to know that the are other babies out there that are the same so will wait for her to grow out of it. I'm hoping she might get better when she becomes mobile and can at least follow me!

Becksmummy: they develop at such different rates, and the stats in the books are just guidelines. HTH
