baby's fingernails scratching at face

ok, I know this isn't the most important topic in the world but my 4 month old seems to be starting every day with a whole load of new scratches to his face - he rubs his eyes when he's tired/settling himself at night, but his nails are catching at his face. I've tried trimming them with baby scissors (which are just too big for his fingers at the moment), regular sessions with an emery board (which he absolutely hates and which still leave jagged edges) as well as mittens (which he also hates- and which seem a bit mean just when he's starting to explore anything and everything with his fingers).. any other suggestions gratefully received!

bite them. Sounds gross, but they are so soft at this age its very easy.

The only way I could keep dd's nails short when she was that small was to bite them. Clippers were too large and I was frightened of cutting her, and because a baby's nails are so soft they come away easily when you bite them!
