At what age do they sit to be read a story?

My DD loves to sit and "read" her books. She'll sit on my knee and let me flick through her picture book, she'll lean over and kiss the pictures
I was just wondering at what age will she be likely to sit and be 'read' a story?
She's 15 months at the moment

dd2 gets a bedtime short story every night which she sits on my knee for, she's 9mths.

my dd is 17 months and loves a story but anything with more than a few words on a page and she starts flicking aimlessly. I find she does best with interactive stories, touch and feel books, lift the flaps, esp the rod campbell books. My son used to listen to quite long stories at a similar age but only as a delaying tactic at bedtime!

are they "proper" stories? I only ask because she'll sit with me with some of her picture books while I point out the pictures, but for things like "very hungry catapillar" she seems to get bored as the pages aren't turning quick enough!

I'd say fairly soon. Just very simple stories to begin with , with lots of rhythm, repetition and rhyme, read again and again and again ... try Going on a Bear Hunt, the Hungry Caterpillar etc

so should I stick at it then? Read more to her? She does love to sit and read her books by herself, but I really want her to enjoy the written word too when she's older and didn't know if pushing it now would stop that.

Counting/colour based books work well too . Brimax do nice board books with simple text and she can start to point at the animals etc as you go along or what about Maisy stories.

My dd enjoys being read a bedtime story now - hungry caterpillar, hairy mclary etc but only really in the last couple of months. We sort of fell into it - she seemd to start to concentrate on the whole book so we started reading them as part of the bedtime routine.

She have a few pop flap up books (Dear Zoo being her fave) and loads of touchy feely books, she loves the Priddy book range (kittens, puppies etc).

my ds is much the same, he flicks through books during the day but we have gradually got him into the habit of lying on our bed at bed time and whilst he drinks his bottle we read him a couple of short books ... hairy maclarey, the gruffalo etc ... seems to have worked really well!
