Strawberry naevus / hemangioma

Hi all, my dd has a strawberry naevus on the soft spot on her head. It appeared four weeks ago as a small purple mark and is now a raised lump roughly 0.5cm high and 1.5cm wide. I'm looking for other parents who had the same on their children so I can see how large your child's one grew. I know it won't give me an answer but right now I'm reading that they can grow for six months which leaves me thinking it's going to get really big. Sad

It was a long time ago but I remember my brother having one of these on his back (back in the 80s). He had it removed when it was about the size of your little finger nail. Can't remember how long he'd had it before then. Hopefully someone will be along with more recent experience.

My DD had one that appeared about a week after she was born. It was the inside of her forearm. I suppose it got to the size of about a penny, or maybe a 2p. It started to fade at about 4 yo and had completely vanished by the time she got to 7/8.

My DD had one on the side of her neck (think 'lovebite'). By about six months old it was bulged and about the size of a 2p coin. We took her to the GP who was unconcerned, he said it was bulging because it was licated directly above a main vein/artery in her neck.
DD has just turned 7 yo and all thats left is a smattering of tiny red dots.

My DS had one on he's thumb and by five months it looked like a big red thumb ( actually it was quite cute) , by a year he's hands had grown and strawberry mark was just a mark and soon disappeared .

Thanks all, how raised did the ones you mention get in the end? I've already had one I sensitive comment from an adult that's seen her 'bump' and I'm just preparing myself.

Dc1 had one on her hip, it gradually disappeared. 3 years old now and has a faint beige stain where it was. It's not very noticeable. Dc2 has a bigger one on her tummy which looks raised (blistered look). Gp is unconcerned, said it is very common in children and fade with time.

Dd1 had loads as a baby, the biggest on the back of her neck, just where t-shirts sit. It got to about the size of a 50p, and was quite raised.
It started to fade when she was about 18 months, and has left a very faint pink mark with a slight depression that you don't notice unless you know it's there. (all of them left the same sort of very minor mark). She's 13 now, and it's not changed for years, so I don't suppose it will now. They don't bother her at all.

This is my daughters at present. When you say quite raised, was it kind of like this?

My daughter had/has one on her forehead between her eyes, was a tiny redmark when she was born and eventually grew to the size and colour of a red fruit pastile, never bothered her or me ( I did start a thread years back about some people and their comments about it ). She is 8 now and you wouldn't even know it has been there. Just a slightly raised flesh coloured bump. I was given the option to have it removed but as it wasn't affecting her eyesight and the removal could have scarred I left it to dissipate on its own. It started losing colour before she started school and she has only have one child point it out to her while she has been there, she shrugged her shoulders and told him it was a birthmark and carried on playing Smile .

I just remembered; our dn had one just above his eyebrow, which sounds similar to what you describe). It faded, he has a very light beige mark there now. People can be insensitive, try to ignore their ignorance. Tell them it's a birthmark, most people will shut up and move along then. It will fade.

My daughter's was/is on her right cheek. It appeared as a red dot about 2 days after birth. By age 2 it was probably at its most obvious - it looked like a red Smartie stuck to her face. Then it sort of spread out and flattened, and now it's fading pretty fast. It's now more like an upside down crescent moon and pale pink. She's 4. I think it'll be gone within a year. From what I've heard, most vanish by 7. Smile

Oh and I remember endless sodding questions about it while she was at nursery. One nursery assistant practically accused me of burning her with a cigarette Hmm

Trace38 my DD had one that looked very much like your daughters, It grew pretty quickly for a few months then stayed the same for about a year. She is 5 now and it has completely disappeared

DD2 has one on her collarbone that appeared around 2 weeks old. She is 4 now and it has faded a lot. I have been told they usually go completely by around 7.

Another one whose DD had one. It first appeared by her eye at a few weeks old and grew quite big, raised and very red. We attended an eye clinic as it was so close to her eye, but she had no problems.
It gradually faded and shrank when she was a toddler, and now is just a very pale, flat mark which only really shows when she gets upset or cross! A dr friend once told me to not go down the surgery road (not that we were considering it!) as sometimes the scars can be worse than the faded mark...
You honestly wouldn't know if you didn't know her as a baby. We soon got used to it and it didn't bothered us, apart from, as a PP poster said, stupid comments from ignorant people!

My DD is one and was born with one on her back. It's about the size of your thumb nail.

I'm convinced it's fading around the upper border.

Oh thanks youremywifenowdave that does look the same. How large did it get? Did it appear smaller as she grew? DD's continues to grow and we are being referred to paediatric dermatology team as the doctor is concerned with the growth rate.

Your daughters hair will probably cover that before it fades. My 6 month old has got one on her back and I actually like it. I think it's cute and must remember to take a photo of it to remember it. It's about the size of 2 5p pieces side my side and pretty raised.

If you are on FB search for the Group called The Birthmark Support Group.

Its the most fantastic place to get as much info as you need and the Nurse from Great Ormand Street Hospital is always floating around on there giving advice and pointing people in the right direction to get help. There are also loads of parents in the same position you can talk to for support.

There are so many treatments now, Timolol which is a cream or propranolol if it goes into rapid growth so dont panic too much if that does happen. Most disappear on their own without any intervention but a Plan B is always good just for peace of mind!

I know a few people who had them removed in childhood because they kept knocking them on things and they really bleed (eg one kid I knew had one on his knee). Nothing life threatening but just a big nuisance and I guess infection risk with an area of skin that is so easily broken. But otherwise I think they just leave them alone and they disappear by about 5yrs old.
