Terrible threes?

I've had my ds (3.5) for a day of one on one today, and I was really looking forward to it, but as ever, didn't go as planned. I feel like one of those mothers you see who totally can't control their children. He was off wriggling, running about, talking loud and making escape attempts in the cinema ( I can let this go , he is only 3) bu tout in public his behaviour is really bad. he won't listen to a word ||||I say, won't stay with me, won't hold my hand etc. At one point he actually ran across the road, which he has never done before. He is usually very sensitive and cautious. he doesn't seem like my same little boy. I have had reports of naughtiness and mischief and general misbehaviour from his teachers as well for the last few weeks.

I really want to support him, but don't want to come across as soft. I want to nip this in the bud before he turns into one of those awful supernanny kids, but I really don't know how.

I know it sounds like an obvious suggestion but has there been any recent change in his diet that might cause him to act a little wilder than usual?

E numbers, quantities of sugar / caffiene etc?

My 3 1/2 year old has been lovely for weeks but today he has been absolutely awful - shouting/yelling/running off/crying etc etc - completely terrible - feel quite depressed as was looking forward to the christmas hols - now wishing had booked him into holiday club. He has been just plain horrible and I have just put him in his room for screaming at me. I have tried to do lots of nice things with him and he has had odd moments of niceness but they are shortlived. so I completely sympathise with you and am sending sanity vibes by the bucket load!
