advice on our five year old son

we are going through a really hard stage with our five year old son. he is either hitting his older sibling, winding her up, giving us back chat, chucking stuff around, whingeing or throwing tantrums over tiny stuff like a drawing not coming out right. we are both finding it really hard to be patient with it all as it is pretty unrelenting at the moment. the worst of it is that no matter what we do - shout, threaten time out etc, give time out, explain the problem - nothing seems to be getting through to him. he's a bright little lad - very articulate and can be very caring and gentle - especially with smaller children. he gets into trouble every now and then in school - mostly for getting into scrapes with other little boys.

if anyone has tips on how to get through to him we would be so grateful!

My four year old is going through a defiant stage recently, he's a very kind and caring boy though, I think it's a mix of his age, pressures of school and tiredness, he's very tired now we're nearing the end of term. I remove toys and any other privileges, which seems to be working well. I also asked his teacher if she had noticed a change, but she said he's been absolutely fine. I think he's just letting off steam at home!
