3 year old stuttering

DS is now 3.8. About 18 month ago we had some speech therapy as he only had around 5 words and I was concerned. The assessment from the speech therapist was that he had very good understanding, just delayed speech and that we should go back in 6 months. If he hadn't started stringing short sentences together and hadn't expanded his vocabulary to around 100 words by then, then further intervention would be necessary.

6 months later his speech had developed very rapidly, he was talking in fairly complex sentences, and had about 150-200 words.

The speech therapist was happy that he development was just delayed and that he was on track and developing well. He was discharged.

Anyway, with in the last 6 -8 months he's developed a stutter. It stated by repeating the first sound of the word several times, or the whole word. "Cccccccccan I have have have have have a dddddddddrink?"
This persisted for about two months and then suddenly got better.
Shortly after, it came back but had changed. He started stretching the words out
"Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan I have a drink?"

This also went on for a few weeks.
It's now changed again, it's worse than ever.
It's a mixture of repetition of a syllable or a word, stretching words and getting completely stuck. He sometimes shuts his eyes with the effort of trying to get the word out. One syllable words are ok- two syllables or more is horrific, he gets stuck on the last syllable of just about every word.

He doesn't seem too bothered by it, but he's aware and sometimes I says "I don't know" so he doesnt have to finish.

I am waiting for another appointment and will go private if need be.

Has anyone else had a similar experience- I'd love to hear how things worked out. I'm worried sick tbh.

Sorry this is so long- thanks for reading.

Stuttering is very common at that age. All three of mine did and it had vanished before they started reception.

Thanks soupdragon, that's reassuring. DD1 had a bit of a stutter too that disappeared. DS's is on a whole new level! Hopefully it's just a stage too though
