7 year old wanting to text/message on iPod

My 7 year old has an iPod and is desperate to be able to text me. Is there a messaging 'system' she can use on an iPod. Obviously I will monitor this and it's only me she would be allowed to message. At the moment she is 'texting' via dp email (however that works?) and would rather it wasn't linked that way.

Sorry have put this in geek stuff but not sure that's the right place to ask?

I don't know if this is what you mean (possibly not):

We don't bother with any of these 'newfangled' gadgets - just a proper computer, and BT phone.

Does she really NEED this facility? Surely she can have your phone number for EMERGENCY use.

If I find a secure facility though, I'll let you know.

Confused Not sure why you would use a paid service.

Do ipods not do imessage and facetime? I think that's pretty safe because you have a set contact list, right? Or you could put skype or something like that on it. Just set her profile to private so only you and DP can add her as contacts.

If you have an iPhone she can iMessage you, otherwise she can use whatsapp from iPod.
