I really am dreading my DD going into her own room (DD is 11 weeks) but in my heart I know we will both get a better nights sleep without disturbing each other. On the other hand I want her near me, and I'm worried how she will take to being on her own in her room (she does take naps in her cot) Sooooo many conflicting thoughts/emotions so would love to hear your stories and if you had any worries before hand?
TIA

I felt really guilty about putting him in his own room before the 6mths mark but figured it better he not end up in hosp with concussion!

And tbh your instincts won't let you down. I mean on a totally separate topic - you're supposed to sterilise for the first 12 months. I stopped at 8mths when DS started licking the floors as I couldn't see any point in continuing sterilising if he was gonna do that. He's now 21mths and has only needed 1 antibiotic ever (and that was something he picked up from another child in creche!)

You'll be fine

xx

We put dd in own room at 12 weeks, as we were disturbing each other, three nights later she slept through 8-7! We used a grobag when we made the transition so she felt secure, and I knew she couldn't come untucked. Now I'm trying to re-learn sleeping through!

Jam77 · 01/12/2006 17:58

Thanks Lauren - I have tried those gro bags but DD still won't sleep unless swaddled and really by now she shouldn't be as she only excapes anyhow

our very big daughter swapped from moses basket quite early, (can't recall when exactly) to her cot still in our room. She's 24 wks now and has been in her room for about a week now, but just on the middle of the spare mattress on the floor as the whole furniture-rearranging will have to wait until we have several hours to spare . I moved her out with a heavy heart, as I enjoyed watching her playing in the morning and listening to her "singing", but she was waking when we came up to bed, and it was really to see if she could sleep for longer undisturbed. She can, and I am sleeping better now too.

mumofhelen · 02/12/2006 20:28

I moved my dd from her cot next to our bed into her own room at 9 months, without any problems. She was sleeping in a toddler bed by 14 months, again without problems. The only thing is that she wakes up religiously at 6.30am (regardless of bedtime) to watch Ceebeebies - and she doesn't have an alarm clock!

Peridot30 · 02/12/2006 21:12

With ds (who is 5 tomorrow) we put him in own room and cot at 16wks but with dd (now 3) she was put in room with brother at 12 weeks. No problems with either as both slept through the night from 5/6weeks.

Do what you feel happiest with there is no right or wrong time to do it.

HIJACK ALERT

Fascinating to read this thread and all the cool calm answers. I once posted on a thread (something about someone's pregnant S-I-L saying they were planning to put their new baby in its own room when it was born and how could the poster convince them that this was wrong, something like that) and said that DD1 went in her own room from day 3 and I felt like I was almost hounded off MN for being an awful, uncaring mother. Some people seemed to actually be judging my love for my child based on the distance that she slept from me (which actually wasn't that far as our house isn't that big). It's very refreshing, therefore, to see everyone discussing it all so comfortably here.

Hijack/ramble over - thank you!!

henrybaba · 02/12/2006 22:16

We put DS in his cotbed in his own room at 11 weeks. Our midwife had been very stern about ensuring we kept our babies in our rooms until they were 6 months old but our DS grew out of his moses basket and his cotbed was too big to fit in our room so we didnt have much choice. Absolutely fine though...and i think we all sleep better as a result

realjolly · 02/12/2006 22:54

Hm...it's a personal thing I suppose, but for me I liked to keep my lil ones close to me Es went into his own room with no probs age 3 1/2 and then loved it and was ready!
Ms, was a bit differnet and not a good co-sleeper, so moved him into his own bedroom at almost 10 month, and ys, has always been a mixture of co-sleeping and sleeping in his own room and so far we are playing it by ear....he got his own room at 12 month, as we had no space otehr then our bedroom anyway, until we moved into a 4-bedr-house.....and the transition is still ongoing...he will fall asleep downstairs, go upstairs in his own room once asleep and walk in to sleep in our bed sometime between 3-6am...!
Must admit though, I cna, personally, not understand why anyone would put a newborn or young Baby in their own room and sleep better...but that is just me, I know others have other feelings about this!
I suppose the key is to read the research about WHY the recommendations are in place and go from there....

mrspoppins · 02/12/2006 23:07

Mine DDs are now 14 and 8 and have never slept with us or even come into our beds....hate it ...hate it...eughh.eughh.eughh!!! They are fabulous at bedtime and always have been and are loved to bits.Great stable clever little girls.

It was tougher I'm sure with all the tooing and froing when they were young and I needed to keep getting out of bed to go to them but it settled eventually when they started sleeping through.

It really is just choice. No right or wrong way so long as everyone is happy with the situation. I do feel for people though, and I've known a few that this has happened to, when the husband is forced to sleep elsewhere either through lack of sleep or room in the bed!!!

Never ask for opinions on topics such as this if you are feeling bad already...self preservation !!!!!!!

Moses basket in our room til week 3 - then moses basket in his own room, across the hall until week 6 then in the big cot bed - so that he could sleep with his arms outstretched (instead of above his head!)

We have no problems hearing him if he needs us - but benefit from less of the snorting/ grunting/ meowing / general farmyard animal noises from him, previously keeping us awake every 5 mins...

Jam77 · 03/12/2006 21:11

I am loving all of your advice guys - like snowstorm said It's nice that everyone is discussing it comfortably and not judging anyone!! DD is so nearly too big for moses basket so think I'm gonna try the basket in the cot thing then into cot....how long should I leave the basket in the cot for??????? Thanks again for all of your posts - it's like a new family on mumsnet!!!!!

had my ds in our room for a couple of weeks. put him in his own room then because i would worry when i couldnt hear him breathing, wriggling etc next to me and used to waste much needed sleep by keeping an eye on him. he slept thro the night from 8 weeks old and still does.

Jam77 · 06/12/2006 15:00

Hi All - am going to be putting DD in her own room in a few days - should I expect crying? or night wakings? (she currently goes down to bed ok and sleeps through) Wish me luck!

OP posts:
ivelostmyboobsboohoo · 06/12/2006 15:37

hi all, with ds1 i felt pressured into putting him into his own room at only 2 weeks old (dh couldnt stand the noise- poor him !?!) and i used to cry myself to sleep. couldnt bear it for a few weeks. however he has always slept well and always been pleased to go to bed. Although.... ds2 and dd have also both been brilliant sleepers as well, and we have become more lax and laidback as they go on, middle son slept in our room til he was 5 or 6 months, daughter (youngest and def most cossetted!) slept in our bed (with dh on sofa) with me for breastfeeding and then in our room next to me in her crib til she was 6 months. i quite missed her but she seemed happy and slept through no probs. dont remember there being any crying when they slept in their own room for 1st time.

Troutpout · 06/12/2006 15:42

10 weeks

Jam77 · 06/12/2006 18:43

Thanks, just worry that DD will wake up and think why am I on my own - she naps in her cot in the day and has always been fed in her room so she does know it - just not sure how she will take to it at night after 3 months of being in with me She is too big for her basket now and can't fit cot in our room without taking it apart I will find it sad, even though I think we all sleep better, it's like the first thing to let go of - do I sound silly

Aw thanks floating - makes me feel better I'm not the only one - makes me feel a bit sick but I know it's fine, and will be fine, and after a few days I'll be laughing at how much it worried me

mamama · 06/12/2006 19:03

Haven't read the whole thread but about 12 weeks. I think there are some guidelines that say 6 months but DS was far too noisy to stay in our room any longer. No problem for him to be in the big crib in his own room. First night was hard for me though!

Jam77 · 06/12/2006 19:40

I know I'm gonna find it hard mamama - DD is 12 weeks - I just hope it's ok, fingers crossed

both dd's were 4 months - when outgrown their moses basket.
It felt right, they were no longer waking up too often in the night so I didn't need the convenience of just reaching out to lift them into bed to feed.
If she is happy in her cot in the day, then you probably won't have too much trouble at night. You will check on her VERY OFTEN at first and get hardly any sleep but that is normal too i think.
