Cross eyes in baby

My DS is 7 weeks old and still seems a bit cross eyed/ wandering eyes intermittently. I took him for a 6 week check today with the gp and he said he would like to see him again if it's not gone in a month. Thinks it'll probsvly right itself but if not a referral to the eye hospital to check. It has got better since he was smaller. I feel quite upset about this today and worried that he will have something wrong; does anyone have any experience of this?

Don't worry about your baby having 'something wrong' with its eyes. Sight problems are quite common and easily dealt with. Once your baby is able to focus on shapes more, hold things by hand etc your GP or HV will be able to reassure you, as your baby will be using its eye muscles more. They change so much in a month

Thanks Greenhill, I'm sure it'll not he anything major if it is something but I just hope the poor little guy isn't going to have endless trips to the eye hospital in his childhood!

Is it still normal for both eyes to go inwards when looking at a close up object at 8 weeks? Dr Google is giving me mixed messages...

Yes perfectly normal, DD was referred to a consultant opthalmic eye doctor person when she was a bit older as I have a lazy eye and was paranoid, and it was still normal then.

Yes I have experience of this - when my dd was similar age it looked on photos like her left eye was turning inwards. I mentioned it to HV at the 3 month check and she referred us to eye clinic for a checkup for possible squint.

The eye clinic was fine - we went when she was about 5 months old. They did lots of moving objects around and getting her to look at them with each eye separately and both eyes. They said things looked fine and would see her again in a year to make sure.

It's quite common for babies to appear that they have a squint like you describe. It's normally nothing to worry about and they often grow out of it, but if not then it is treatable if detected early

Just checked, she was 6 months before the GP would even talk about it and over 7 months when we had the hospital appointment, 8 weeks is very very young and your baby's eye muscles will strengthen massively in the next few months.

Thanks all it seems to be getting better than it was- I'm just starting to feel a bit paranoid as i don't recall it in dd. i understand that squints in newborns are quite unusual and they usually develop later. Hopefully it'll easily fix
