2 year old going bonkers at bedtime

Up until recently DS (2.4) has been pretty good at bedtime. Most nights he'd just chatter to himself until he fell asleep and occassionally he'd get up and have to be returned.

The last few weeks he's been getting out of bed half a dozen or so times before settling, which I could cope with. But the last few nights he's gone utterly bonkers. He's tired, goes through bedtime routine fine. Then as soon as he's put to bed he's bouncing off the walls. Immediately jumping up, bouncing up and down the bed, laughing his head off. It's like he's had a sudden massive hit of redbull.

I've tried everything I can think of, short of tying him to the bed. What on earth is going on and what do I do to make it stop?

Is he still having a nap? My DS1 started becoming impossible to get to sleep at night so we cut down his nap time.
It sounds like he's either got energy to spare at bed time or something is going off which makes him feel he can't go to sleep, any new additions to the room which he could be scared of?

He still naps but we wake him after an hour. Although I've just collected him from nursery and they'd forgotten about the hour nap time and had been letting him sleep for 2 hours, which might explain it.
