6 month old won't sit

i'm not exactly worried about this, just looking for some reassurance.

dd is 6 months old and seems to hate sitting, other than in highchair for food.

when i try to sit her on the floor, to encourage her to get used to sitting unsupported, or with cushions around or v pillow she just arches her back, sticks her tummy up to try to move. it's like she wants to stand up all the time. if i hold her sitting up she goes straight into a standing position. she doesn't even like sitting on people's laps, she seems to want to stand. even in bumbo now she's arching to get out of it.

at baby groups the other 6 month olds are either very happy to sit supported or on mums lap, or they're able to sit on their own.

will she just eventually decide she likes sitting?! i get these daft thoughts that she'll never sit! sounds ridiculous as i type this out!

She'll be fine. DS2 was like this and he still loves standing. He was lateish to sit unaided - could crawl before he could sit (both at 7m, but crawling came first), because he didn't like being in one place, I think!

j's the same as hunkers DS! he loved tummy time instead of sitting. always wanted to roll about.

my eldest whos now 12 didnt like sitting. he did eventually at 8months and just screamed, learnt to crawl 2weeks later then walked at 10months. he was like your dd and loved standing up.

she could be walking in another 4months and from the sound of it i reckon she will be

thanks everyone! nice to know i'm not the only one with a wriggler. i can imagine she'll crawl before she sits. she already sort of commando crawls to reach things. phew!

She may well crawl before she sits. DD1 could crawl proficiently, including all the stairs unaided, and pull herself up to standing and cruise around the furniture before she could sit unsupported. She was so busy going places she didn't have time to learn to sit around. She finally got the hang of it at just over 10 months! Not surprisingly she still doesn't sit down very often (now 2.11!).

No. I'm afraid you have a child with sitophobia. Children with this disorder invariably turn into adults who are completely unable to sit so can never see films in the cinema, go to the theatre, visit restaurants or use sofas and armchairs in the normal manner. Sufferers are forced to eat standing up or lying down in the style of a roman emperor. While many studies have been done into this unfortunate condition, there is still no explanation or cure.
You have my sympathy.
