Food intolerance

Hi, we think DS (10.5 months) is lactose intolerant. But now I think there's another problem! He's not that interested in food but when he does eat it tends to go straight through him and he has awful wind and strains while still in his highchair. His nappy is green, seedy and very smelly (sorry!). Does this sound like a wheat or gluten intolerance? We're waiting on a dietician appointment for some more advice.

It could be several things - with my own DD it was an intolerance to additives, predominantly ago dyes & benzoate preservatives that I ate with my monthly craving for cheap jelly sweets that she was getting it via my milk as she was BF

Look at what you eat too if you are still BF & keep a diary of foods & flare ups, this should give you a clearer idea

I didn't even think of additives! I'm not BF though he's on SMA lactose free milk. I gave him some fish fingers tonight and it happened immediately after he'd eaten those. My mum had him yesterday so I just left a jar of food out - spaghetti bolognese - and it happened then too which is why I'm thinking wheat.

I'm thinking of splashing out at the 'free from' aisle at the supermarket to see if it makes a difference! Hoping it's all temporary...

If you suspect a reaction to gluten, the initial coeliac test is a blood test and they must be eating significant amounts of gluten for at least 6 weeks prior to it so you are not advised to cut it out. Have a look at www.isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk

Ah thank you tinkerbell! There's me going to start cutting it out tomorrow! I'm going to ring my HV tomorrow and see what she can do about the dietician and blood tests.

Are you sure it is lactose intolerance and not cows milk protein intolerance /allergy? Lactose free milk will still contain cows milk protein so he would still react

You don't need to use the free from isle. There are lots of naturally gluten free products around if you look. Rice, potatoes, quinoa, other grains.

What sort of milk is he on? Could it be that he has cows milk protein intolerance as well as lactose?

Hmm maybe cows milk as well then. We had some milk prescribed by the GP which was everything free but he won't have it, even in porridge! Don't blame him, it does smell rather bad! So I don't know what else to do. When we changed to LF milk it worked wonders for 2-3 weeks, nappies went back to normal, he was much more settled and went back to sleeping through. Now the bad nappies are back. Some food just seems to go straight through him.

Argh they're sent to test us! Good thing he's cute and gives good cuddles hehe xx

Have you tried adding nesquik or vanilla essence to the new milk?

Start a food ( and poop) diary, thats the first thing the dietitian will tell you to do so it will let you skip a stage. My son had an unusual allergy - potato and potato starch, which is in most baby foods, so it was harder to detect. Try making your own foods for him as that cuts down on additives to get a clearer idea of whats happening. If you cut a food group out for just 48 hours it should make a difference to his nappy without affecting any test results he would get in a few weeks.
