6 year old just head butted me

My 6 year old just head butted me in the face. We were reading together and he couldn't manage a particular word. I read it for him and told him what it meant and he shouted 'mum you are annoying me' and head butted me in the face.

It's totally out of character for him, so I had no idea what to do. I immediately told him to go to his room (so I could have a bit of a cry).

After a short while I called him down and explained that his two play dates this week would be cancelled and that he would have to spend the morning in his room.

I've no idea if that was the right thing to do.

A little background that might be upsetting him - I'm due to give birth to DC3 in 6 weeks and his dad is currently working away and he hasn't seen him properly in about 8 weeks. He should be back in three weeks.

Any advice welcome.

He may be feeling more anxious without dad around and you so close to having the new baby, my 6 year old feels a sense of responsibility towards me and his siblings when I'm pregnant and dh is at work. However that's no excuse for head butting, IMO I think you have handled it well, some may say it's too much that has been removed but I'm along the lines of nipping these things in the Budd hard and fast. Try and enjoy the rest of the day and not dwell on what's happened, he certainly won't need reminding of his behaviour.

I really don't want us to have this kind of relationship.
