2.5 year old not talking

My friend's dd is 2 and a half and can't say anything other than yes and no.

I suggested telling the HV but friend doesn't want to, she thinks dd will talk when she's ready.

Would you be concerned?

I would be concerned...

Unless the mum has older siblings who also spoke late, or herself or the father did

Unless she does speak but just not in a way comprehensible to outsiders but her mum understands

And unless she speaks at home but not in public (know a child who did that till 5)

I would also suspect that her mum may be aware of developmental concerns but have chosen not to discuss them with friends, some people take the view of keeping that kind of thing private to prevent people treating them any differently

I would be concerned. Did she have a 2 year review with the hv? Does she speak in a way that sounds unintelligible to you but that the mother understands?

Older sibling was speaking normally much earlier. She really doesn't speak at all, just makes noises and points, my friend regularly says she wishes she knew what she wanted.

She didn't have her 2 year review, friend says she hasn't seen HV since dd was signed off when she was tiny.

It's awkward really, I don't know whether to bring it up again and risk her thinking I'm interfering but I am a bit worried.

I think all kids have a 2 year review? We weren't seeing a HV by then but def had a letter for DS' then we had a reminder and another one as I forgot and didn't go first time round plus a phone call to make sure I was going!

Tbh if the girl was in nursery or daycare of some sort this would be picked up very fast... Is she going to go at 3?

My DD didn't have a 2 year review. Cost cutting meant we got a letter saying 'can your child do this stuff?' and a number to call for an appointment if we were worried.

I'm pretty sure that the letter said that a 2 year old should have more than 2 words though, so a 2.5 year old not talking would definitely be a concern.

Can you find an online milestone checklist to send her?

She got invited for the 2 year review but didn't go. As far as I'm aware it's not compulsory to go.

She's never been in nursery, my friend and her dh work but the dc are looked after by a family member.

I think your friend needs to get her head out of the sand, it might be something really simple but she's losing valuable time for early intervention if something is truly needing support. Surely the family member who cares for her has concerns if it's so much later than siblings?

Isn't the average 50 words at 2.5y check? Can the child hear ok?

No other languages. I think they've all got their heads in the sand tbh, there's lots of talk of dc being lazy and getting there eventually.
