My son is 6, thinking of starting this now, is this about the average age or should i wait until he himself asks to do it?

whats the rush? If he is not asking I would wait, no harm in showing him now though. If you do get him to wash own hair you'll need to check the soap is fully wAshed out.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 28/07/2015 18:41

Don't do it yet!
it's still a nightmare for me washign the soap out.

neolara · 28/07/2015 18:41

My nearly 6 yo washes her own hair.

Not yet, trust me if you do it now you will be creating a rod for your own back.

TheJiminyConjecture · 29/07/2015 17:58

My 5 year old has been doing it for a while now. It helps that she loves to fanny about and sing in the shower so there's plenty of time to rinse!

birchykel · 30/07/2015 08:13

My 4 yr old has started doing it herself I'm always with her and make sure it's washed out properly but she loves to do it all herself.

Cedar03 · 30/07/2015 08:55

My daughter was able to do this herself when she was 6. Pretty sure from about 4 she could manage it.

I'd certainly encourage him to give it a go - a 6 year old should be able to manage to wash themselves, etc with supervision.

Marioswife · 31/07/2015 02:42

if you do let him try it, make sure you give pleanty of time because you will have to wash tonnes of shampoo from his hair afterwards.

FastWindow · 31/07/2015 02:44

My 5yo does, but I check the rinse.

FastWindow · 31/07/2015 02:45

Same with teeth - he does it himself, but I go over the job.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 31/07/2015 02:53

My 5yo does it herself, but with me checking that everything is rinsed out. She's mostly pretty good, just sometimes misses a couple of bits
