Worried about my DS eye sight 2 year old

When would you go and get the eyesight of your child checked out? Lately I noticed that my 2 year old is running it thing that he could clearly see. For example today he wanted to bring the rabbits grass and he started running and didn't see that huge (about 3 feet diameter) tree and ran right into it, now he has this huge bump on his forehead.
Couple days ago I came into the living room and he saw me coming and ran right into me.

It could be more a co-ordination confusion than his sight.

Some things you may be able to 'test' for yourself, but if you are in any doubt, go to GP, HV, or optician.

Agree with advice above but I would get him checked. Ask your local opticians if they test children that young, some will, some won't. The test will be free and at least then you'll know

I found at optician specialising in youngsters. Our hv could also refer us to a nhs clinic

Thank you..the reason why I'm also worried is because it runs in the family, my husband has poor eye sight and me too. And my brother had it so bad that he is half blind one eye because my parents noticed it to late

Following. Ds is nearly 2 and has had similar incidents. Also I'm convinced he's colourblind (which runs in family). Have asked cm to look out for it as she has more experience than me (pfb) but was wondering when optician would be reasonable. Sorry for hijak.

I was worried about my 3yr old's eyesight and asked the health visitor about it. She referred him to an ophthalmology clinic at a local health centre. It was the team from the hospital but they ran an outpatients children's clinic a couple of times a month. They were great and had lots of great resources and techniques for testing young children's eye sight that might not be available to an optician. Might be worth asking the health visitor or G.P.

Yes you can check children's eyesight at that age. I had concerns about DS vision (family history), mentioned it to HV who did a referral. He had his vision tested, results were fine but we have a follow up for next year too. He was 14 months old at the recent test, the Dr had all sorts of resources for testing his vision at age one and said they will have even more for the test next summer when he is two as he'll hopefully be able to tell us better what he can see during the check.

I've taken the DC to the optician annually since they were two years old. The resources they have now for testing toddlers and non-reading children are fab. My youngest always comes out from her test complaining that she doesn't want to wait a whole year to go back! Early onset poor eyesight runs in both families so I'm keen to monitor it although no problems have shown up so far.

Some opticians are more familiar with testing pre-schoolers than others. The optician I go to is the one the HV recommends so they're very used to 2 year olds and are amazing with them. You don't need to be referred and the test is free. I'd either ask the health visitor or just ask your optician if they do 2 year olds - those that don't can probably tell you who does.
