Can I ask how you would handle 2.5 year old removing nappy or pulling nappy down frequently?

I know he is doing it to gain access as his willy is his favourite thing at the moment but it is causing lots of 'wee accidents' and I'm wondering if it's just a pre potty training stage or if I am missing something obvious.

He is nowhere near potty training as he isn't telling me when he has done a poo but does register when he has wet his clothes and doesn't like it. He also has speech delay so I think it might take us longer than most to potty train when we get there.

My main issue is the accidents. About three times a day he is pulling the front of his nappy down and then eventually weeing on his clothes/ the furniture/ his cot etc. I have him in pull ups and wonder if I should go back to standard nappies which are tighter around the waist. Or even poppered vests?

Any advice from fellow souls please

I would put a normal nappy on backwards and maybe poppered vests for at night? Or you could try potty training?

It's not a pre-potty training stage. It's a "I need potty training" sign, loud and clear. He's telling you he knows he's weeing and wants to do something about it.
Leave it much later and you're teaching him that its okay to know you're weeing and not do anything about it, just go in your pants.

you'll have accidents. The first step of potty training is accepting that accidents happen and you'll need to be cleaning up wee from the floor from time to time.

My son had a speech delay but was toilet trained at 2.5 yrs , as long as he understands what you say speech has little to do with it . I would try potty training now .

He is telling you in his own way that he is ready.
There are also benefits of signing alongside speech delay. Makaton is child friendly

Potty train him. Use pull ups if you concerned about poo accidents. Aldi ones good value and work well. I like a little loo seat rather than a potty and used that with ds1 from aged 2, out and about just balanced him on a loo seat holding on. Potty I took with me for emergencies whilst driving. Surely a lot of your friends have already potty trained same ages dc by now. I was one if later ones at 2.8.
