Julio Iglesias has saved my sanity - 10mth old teething

I just felt the need to spread the word in the hope that it may help some other mother of a teething tot. Julio Iglesias is my hero! DD 10mo has been a nightmare the last 2 days (usually never a peep out of her) with two more teeth cutting thru (5th & 6th). Last night she woke at 10.30 and after 2.5 hours of trying to settle her I noticed she seemed to calm down when I sang to her, but not enough to go to sleep (and lets face it theres only so long you can sing for when you're dying to go to sleep). I set up my little CD/alarm clock in her room and grabbed the first mellow-ish CD that came to hand, Julio's. Within 5 minutes of popping it on DD was snuggled up with teddy in her cot sound asleep. I figured maybe it was just a fluke and after 2.5 hours she was exhausted and would have fallen asleep anyway, so when she kicked off 5 minutes after going to bed tonight I went straight up, stuck Julio on again, et voila, sound asleep in a matter of minutes. The only downside is I have to listen to him through the baby monitor but hey it's gotta be better than having her screaming with the pain.

Laughing at this post because when ds was a baby and was restless and crying (which was most nights) dh used to put ELVIS on with dimmed lights and he was sleeping within minutes...thats ds sleeping not dh!!

Lisa, you are a shining example of improvisation . I have sung myself nearly hoarse to get DD to sleep in the past, and it's never occurred to me to put on a CD, d'oh.

Mind you, I don't own any Julio! Do you think some Zero 7 would suffice?

orangetrees · 16/11/2006 20:20

JULIO IS THE NUMBER 1!!! I use to listen to him while pregnant, now my dd loves it as much as her mum!!!

mumofhelen · 16/11/2006 20:30

My mum used your method on me - she swore by it and said that it was nice that I enjoyed his music/signing as much as she did/does - apparently I used to fall asleep within a minute of a song called something along the lines of "the begining of the begining"?????!!!. Can I just add that I now hate this man's music - can't stand it - would rather listen to Elvis and that's bad enough!

mumofhelen, you are killing me, elvis!! . Give Julio a chance, he really knows how to sing a love song!!
He was today at the Paul Obrady show, btw.

I think I might have to check out the CD collection this evening. I tried singing a lullaby to DD the other night and it made her scream even louder. I thought I had an okay singing voice

No way - I had to listen to "Julio" up till I went to boarding school at 9 years old. My mother played all his 'hits' time and time again. Over and over. She's even met the bloke - has a photo of her and Julio framed - and went everywhere to see him in concerts etc. I've given him too many chances. I can still remember the tune to this begin the beguine song or whatever it was and I haven't heard it for over 20 years. I would even dare suggest that I would rather listen to dd crying than to Julio Iglesias!

mumofhelen, your mum met him !!!

When dd was a baby boyzone or celine dion did it for her, stick it on and she would be fast asleep in minutes! Only down side was when we were out shopping and the shop was playing one of their songs she would drop off!

It's amazing what music can do for them -totally agree although not sure I could stand julio every night!

There is one (classical) track on the CD player in the car that used to send my ds straight to sleep when he was a young baby.

Now at 16 months he has definite 'views' of music. There are a few tracks that are guaranteed to make him giggle and if anything is too slow he starts complaining!

weird.

Yes, my mother met Julio Iglesias in the early 1980s. She has framed the damn photos too for all to see in the hallway. They are her pride and joy (together with the signed albums and momentos etc). I think it's all a little sad, but to my mother it's one of the highlights of her life. Poor so and so....
