Do you allow your children to jump on the sofa?

I don't and don't really like it when other children jump on mine. If they want to get rid of some energy whats wrong with the garden?

I only let the dog in the leather chair (so I can brush the hairs off lol)

Not on the sofa cos I hate hoovering

ProfYaffle · 15/11/2006 15:00

I don't feel particularly strongly either way, dd clambers around on the settee but I'm nervous about your actual bouncing incase she falls off. She's never tried it anyone else's house yet. I suppose when she's big enough to cause damage (she's 2 and small for her age) I'll have to think again.

FrayedKnot · 15/11/2006 15:01

Yes, it's what sofas are for.

They are also for making into pretend boats, and snuggling on under a duvet when you are ill.

We have old ones that have been jumped on many a time, and no worse for wear.

DS also jumps on our bed, it is superkingsize so makes an excellent trampoline.

I don;t think I will be allowing him to do it when he's 12 though.

CountessDracula · 15/11/2006 15:04

In our last house our dog had her OWN SOFA

Drusilla · 15/11/2006 15:11

Lol at CDs dog with own sofa. One of my Dads friends has three armchairs in the sitting room - one for him, one for his wife and one for Rose the dog!

robin3 · 15/11/2006 15:25

We have two different sofas....one leather sofa for jumping on, sitting on and drinking on and one fabric sofa which is a no-go area for the children.

I will make sure that my kids understand that you can't go to other peoples homes and assume it's ok to jump on their sofas in the same way.

helenhismadwife · 15/11/2006 15:56

yes lots of jumping on the sofa and the bed (usually when I am in it trying to sleep DH brings them in and throws them on the bed ) cushions on the floor as well its what kids do, we used to do it all the time.

They have never done it round anyone elses house, although they did do it in the very posh hotel we stayed in a few months back

serenity · 15/11/2006 16:12

Me, DS1 and DS2 broke my bed bouncing on it - DH was not happy at having to repair it, so DD is only allowed to bounce on it when DH isn't home I discourage sofa bouncing because DSs are just too big now, I didn't mind when they were little - we haven't got a garden for them to let off energy in, or room for a trampoline.

ellesbells · 15/11/2006 16:17

lovin this thread. makes a refreshing change to all the bad things in life. sponsered sofa bounce-a-thon anyone??

DarrellRivers · 15/11/2006 19:41

LOL at CDs dog with her own sofa.
Ours has her own leather beanbag, and she gives visitors evil stares if they dare to sit on it

clairemow · 15/11/2006 19:46

no. Ds bounces on the bed, but not the sofa, although no problem with making dens, snuggling, taking the cushions off and bouncing on them on the floor etc. Was v. annoyed once a couple of years ago when someone else let her children bounce all over my (brand new at the time) sofa.

SparklyGothKat · 15/11/2006 19:53

No to sofa and bed jumping, only because I brought a new leather sofa and all new beds for the kids when we moved here in july. DD1 broke her bed within a week jumping on it so now they know they are not allowed, though I have caught them jumping on my bed when they think I am not looking.....

belgo · 15/11/2006 19:59

I let my nearly three year old and one year old both jump on the sofa and beds, under my strict supervision. My reasoning is that they need to use up energy, it helps with development etc, the more they do it the better at it they will get, and under my supervision they are safe. We have an old sofa and have no intention of buying a new one until the children are a lot older. They never do it when I'm not supervising.

worcestercaroline · 15/11/2006 20:04

I dont due to a friend of mines child was bouncin on her sofa and ended up in hospital with a fractured skull, she was just under 3yrs at the time and had to spend a fair few days in hospital.

sorry ellesbells I have just read yr comment!!! do not have problem with bouncing on bed under supervision as its bigger than sofa

NorksBride · 15/11/2006 20:31

No to sofas & beds - we have hard floors and stone fireplaces and sharp-edged furniture all lurking about for children daft enough to treat the house like a gymnasium. I'm not living with 'corner protectors' and fireguards forever so the DCs have to show some sense.

The playroom is big & safe for jumping around and so is the garden.

Plus my brothers friend dislocated his shoulder doing this and his father 'put it' back for him. Gave me nightmares for weeks. You wouldn't think a 10 year old could squeal that much.

figroll · 15/11/2006 20:47

No I don't. It is an antique and it really gets me cross!!! Children need rules and I can't live in a madhouse (or at least no more mad than it already is). I don't let them jump on the bed either. My dd went to someone's house once, jumped on the bed and broke the leg off it - I was totally mortified and she got a good telling off. I don't think she did it after this.

VanillaMilkshake · 15/11/2006 20:49

I let DD(3) jump on the bed when her walking was developing, at about 11 monhts, as I thought it would help - which it did. However, over 2 years on and we now have a problem stopping her from jumping on the bed. Her bed is not suitable for jumping as it has metal bars for slats, but ours is a divan - a quite old divan at that and protests with each bounce. She does know we dont like her diong it. But I can't help smiling and have to and hide my face when I hear her saying "weee, look at me, up and down up and down"

As for the sofas she doesnt jump on them - never has. She jumps off them - she is like Tarzan, she jumps about a 3ft gap from the arm of one to the seat of another. She tightropes along the back of them and vaults over them. And she jumps off the arms on to the floor which a height of about 2.5ft!

In my defence we have had the sofas an age, and as soon as my impending bump has reached about 2 they will be replaced.

However in the meantime DH and me are waiting for the day she announces she is going to go bungy jumping or sky diving!

VanillaMilkshake · 15/11/2006 20:53

Would like to add that I never let her jump in othe rpeoples houses and all my friends have my permission to tell her to get down if she ever startsa dn i am not around. I explain to her that our friends chairs etc are new - which they all are (well newer than ours)

Adorabelle · 15/11/2006 21:11

My dd who's 2.6 does jump on the bed & we don't
mind, I have Great memories of 'Bedjumping' when I small, & it also doesn't bother me.

I DO not let her jump on the sofa, ours or anyone else's. She knows she can Bedjump & not Sofajump.

sandcastles · 15/11/2006 21:16

Why not? They are only young once. Same as jumping in the beds....right of passage, surely!

We have a leather sofa & dd loves to sit on the top and slide down, going weeeeee all the way down (not that far, but she has an amazing nack of spinnng it out)

All 4 of us kids used to jump from our parents dressing table onto their bed...passed many a wet & dreary afternoon in out house!

Adorabelle · 15/11/2006 21:20

Here Here sandcastles

duke · 15/11/2006 21:25

my friend encouraged my ds2.4 to jump off her sofa on to a pile of cusions on the floor. This didn't go down well when he did it at my mums.

ludaloo · 15/11/2006 21:28

yeh both mine jump on the sofa......and on the beds
