Hi all

My DS turned 6 weeks on Wednesday, I think he's been going through his growth spurt since about Tuesday. He's usually such a content little boy so wanted some words of wisdom and reassurance on the below points if poss! He is formula fed.

-How long do 6 week growth spurts usually last? His other spurts only lasted a day or two, this one has been 5 days now, is this normal?

  • he has become very fussy during feeds, taking much longer and crying when he pauses to be winded then cries for more but pulls away from the bottle or cries when it's offered. He is still hungry and does carry on with the feed but every bottle has become a battle. Often he will fall asleep after about 10ml then wake up screaming half hour later for more. Tried changing to size 2 teats but made not difference.

-relating to this, he usually has 150ml but I've just given him 180ml but is still hungry. He does usually cluster feed in the evenings but it seems to be constant feeding all day and I'm worried he is having way to much even for a growth spurt.

-He has been sick after feeds every day since Monday, last night it was projectile. DR has prescribed baby gaviscon but it doesn't seem to be working, can it take a little while to become effective? I wonder if he's being sick because he's having too much milk, but he is still hungry so if I don't feed him he just screams.

-he is waking more frequently at night and taking shorter gaps, which I know is normal for growth spurts but I'm desperate for it to pass!

Does all of this sound normal for a growth spurt and reflux? I guess it's just unlucky timing that the reflux got particularly bad during the spurt.

Would be good to hear others experiences of the 6 week spurt to reassure me that there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Thanks in advance

This all sounds like reflux to me. Gaviscon helped my dd with helping keep her milk down but ask your GP for ranitidine or omeprazol.
I eventually got mine onto omeprazol but turned out she had a milk intolerance too and she refused bottles from 5 months.
Does DS have eczema or anything? That was the the first sign of intolerance for mine.
