From Bottle to Cup

At what age did your little ones go from a bottle to a cup? And at what age did they hold their own bottle or cup. I have been going to playgroup and had some not nice comments because my 12 month old still has a bottle

Mine can drink from a cup at 9 months old, but still has his milk from a bottle. Just starting to get him to have his milk from a cup now because the HV advised to at his 8 month check. I found the doidy cup very good, but don't trust him to hold it as he's likely to throw the contents around.

DD1 had water or juice from a Tomas Tipee cup from around 6/7 months old but I let her drink her morning and evening milk out of a bottle until she was around 2 years old (this was because she wouldn't drink milk any other way and I thought it was more important to get the milk in to her). With hindsight I think that maybe I should have switched her milk to a cup from perhaps around 10 months old as I did with DD2 as it was a much easier transition.

At 12 months old, I'd probably start weaning LO off a bottle on to a cup sooner rather than later. It's supposed to be better for their teeth AND it's much easier to clean cups, borrow other people's if you are at their houses etc. Think most children can hold their own cups from around 8 or 9 months old perhaps?

No need for anyone to make nasty comments though, don't know what that's all about

Take no notice of nasty comments.My DS1 had to go into hospital at 11mnths and so I tried to get him off the bottle beforehand but he wouldn't drink.When he started walking I would leave his cup on the table and when he realised he had to drink out of the cup and nothing else he soon got the hang of it.DS2 is 12months and is still on a bottle and won't even hold that but he'll do it when he's ready.

my dd is two still has her milk from a bottle, she loves it and its a great comfort, is it really that bad for teeth?

My lo is nearly 11 months and will drink water from a tomee tippee cup but doesnt drink much from it. I therefore still give him his milk from a bottle as i dont think he would get enough otherwise. He is completely unimpressed if i give him his milk from the cup and loves his bottle.

Like the other poster i think its more important that he gets enough milk at this age rather than what he drinks it from.

As for people making nasty comments i would try and rise above it...they are clearly judgemental types and i think that type always find something to be smug about...tis a way of hiding their own insecurities i reckon.

My ds is 13 months and can not drink from a cup or a bottle by himself.

He still has his milk from a bottle, I will deal with this once we come back from hols in 2 weeks.

My dd is 7 mths and drinking from tomee tippee cup, i had to give her a cup as she wouldn't take a bottle, it took her 3 mts to get used to taking water from it and she has only just started taking milk from it.I think it is just a matter of perserverance. My dd only takes the milk when she knows that i am not around to breastfeed her!

FGS ignore other peoples comments all children are different. DS stopped having a bottle at around 18mths prior to that he completely refused to entertain a beaker. Now he is just 3 and still uses a beaker of a night but is capable of using a cup.
DD is 10mths and from 6mths old has been able to use a beaker and a proper cup to drink[with me holding] with no problems. Yet she also has a dummy that she is addicted to where Ds didnt have any other comfort thing.

DS3 is almost 23 months and still has a bottle of milk at night. I don't see a huge problem with that at all. We brush his teeth well before bedtime and he doesn't have a bottle at any other time. He enjoys the cuddle (as does DS2, almost 4, but out of a cup now) and so do I. It's a nice way of winding down the day.

I have to admit to hating seeing older children with bottles hanging out of their mouths at all times of the day, but when it is purely a bedtime thing it shouldn't matter.

I am a firm believer in doing what you think is right as your childs mother. If you don't see it as being a huge problem, then why should others.

DS2 had a bedtime bottle until he was about 2.3. We went to MIL's to saty and I realised we had forgotten his bottle, so I offered him his baby brothers or his cup. He chose the cup and hasn't had a bottle since, so they do stop eventually.
