At what age is it 'normal' for a child to start recognising letters and also reading them from a book?

My DS has only recently started doing this and he is 4.6. He points them out in books and loves watching countdown and getting to say the letters.

Can vary loads IME. Some learn letters early as 2yo, yet there are also reception age children who do not know all of thieir letters yet.

Reading again varies widely. There are a few who learn before starting school. Some find reading harder and it doesn't click until Y1 or even Y2. Most seen to learn to read whilst in reception at school.

My DS was two on Sunday and as ZDDZda mentioned he reads out the letters on COuntdown as Carol V puts them on the board. He will also sit down with a book or a newspaper and tell me the letters. Very impressed. He has been doing this for the last month or so.

Ds was 3 last month and has been doing this for around 6mths or so but was told he was quite early. He also does the same with numbers.

Both ours could do it by 2 but they were n't particularly early readers just fascinated by letters and books.
