Signs for potty training

What are the signs to look out for to see if your child is ready to be potty trained?

My DD is 18 months so still very early but would like to know what I'm meant to be looking out for. Also my MIL bought her an all-singing all-dancing potty (wouldn't have picked that one personally!) and think it's maybe a good idea to leave it out for DD to get used to.

Any other tips?

I would leave the potty around but make no fuss about it at all, just let her interact with it how she wants with no pressure.

In terms of signs, I waited until my DS could reliably tell me when he'd done a poo (he would ask for a nappy change), which came fairly early. It took a lot longer for him to reliably notice that he was doing a wee, so I waited until he seemed to know he was doing a wee. He was 2yrs 9 months when we did potty training and it took 2 to 3 days and he's been really good so far, about a month in.

For a long while beforehand, I talked a lot about when he would be wearing pants not nappies and just discussing what happens. He saw other children using potties/toilets at nursery and so was quite keen to try it. I really felt there was no point trying until he was aware of weeing. I allowed him a lot of nappy free time before we started properly training, with the inevitable accidents, as I wanted him to notice if he did a wee.

I waited till dd was saying 'I've done a poo' just before she actually did one so knew the sensation that it was coming. She also started wanting her nappies changed after one little wee. She was 2.5 and she is now 2.6 and clean and dry with accidents few and far between. Poo took longer...Shock
We left a potty lying around and chatted about it for a bit from about 18mo but never used it till recently..
