DS (almost 4) had been slow to talk so has had some SALT help but he's quite chatty now, except if you ask him a direct question then I get 'no' and he does something else. How can I help him to be more confidentand to answer me?

Start asking open questions not closed ones. Closed questions have a yes/no answer. Open ones promote discussion or opinion.

With my ds the first questions he became good at answering were ones where he was give a choice. What would you like to do ds x or y? Would you like x or y to drink? And then progress from there asking a bit about why he chose x or y. He is 6 now and I can ask him what he did at school today and he will tell me some things he did which is a huge improvement.
