What's your 8 month olds favourite toy?

DS's toy collection is quickly become too young for him. Lots of teddies and rattles.
Want to update with some new ones. Developmental/learning ones.
He's crawling and pulling himself to stand.
Any recommendations?

Fisher Price activity table - sturdy enough to pull himself up on and loads to occupy - it was out for nearly 5 years in our house as just as DD1 few out of it at nearly 3 DD2 started to use it and it went on to have another two and a half years of use. Best money spent ever.

Thanks Harley. Sounds great. I especially like the idea that he can pull himself up on it, instead of the curtains or something tip-able!

Something from the varied Duplo range is excellent, as it can develop and teach various activities and skills: counting, colours, shapes, animals; and a bit later add vehicles, trains, boats. Duplo bricks encourage early 'construction', and stimulate cooperation and language, if an older sibling or an adult join in.

Whatever DD1 is playing with...

Usually Lego at the moment, though she either just bashes them together or chews on them.

She does love a horrible self-moving ball that also plays music.

A shape sorter or anything he can put things in and take things out of. He won't be able to put the right shapes in the holes but getting things in and out is enough! I've just put together a treasure basket for DS which is basically just loads of bits and bobs like wooden spoons, sponges, shiney things, etc that he can choose and pick things out of and fiddle with. He likes household objects and since I don't want him gnawing on the remote all day I've bought him his own household objects to play with! If you google treasure baskets there's loads of ideas! Anything that has an element of choice is good at this age so they can pick what they want!

1. this little indoor play house has been hugely popular and provides a focus in the room, and all kids seem to love it. Probably our number one toy between 6 and 18 months.

1. pop up tunnel is inexpensive, stores easily, and got lots of use (in different ways) for a long time in our house

1. Stacking cups are simple but popular

1. It always surprises me how much little ones love these pop up peg people.

1. You're probably just getting to inset puzzle age

1. Musical instruments are good: a drum, some bells,castinets

1. Balls of different sizes and types, eg a football, those sensory balls that light up

It is very similar to the one we had - I loved it as both mine were slow to walk and I felt all that pulling up and standing was great for their legs.
Another brilliant feature is the more effort they put into it, the more reward they get in terms of songs,flashing lights and colours - it engages them for ages as they can work out by pushing X they get Y etc.

Agree with buglife. At 8 months, my DS was getting over his spoon obsession but LOVED playing with a set of plastic rings that were supposed to be used for hanging a shower curtain. Anything stackable is also good.

I have a 3 year old so he tends to access older toys, but he likes

Cars (especially the the ones you pull back and they drive off)
Musical instruments
The play kitchen
Duplo

I wouldn't spend too much money as they grow so fast, think what things will really work long time. So maybe an activity table that can also be used as a table to sit at when they're older is a better investment

A small, robust electric keyboard (we got an ELC one, from a car boot sale) was a great toy for dd from about this age - and is still in her music box, and occasionally played with, now she is three, and has a piano and larger keyboard.
