What age do kids start telling fibs?

DD age 3yr 7mths didn't want to go to nursery today and said she had a tummy ache. She gets alot of tummy aches and has done since she was a baby. But today i think she may have used it as an excuse to stay home.

My dd only 8 months put has been pretend crying for attention for months!

I think it's only really from 3 or so that they start lying. It's only then that they realise that they can hide the truth from you - that you don't automatically know everything they know!

She has just come home from nursery. No tummy ache and really bright. She insists she not telling fibs. Im not convinced.

My ds2 is 2.2 and he tell definite, deliberate fibs. Then he laughs, and he has been known to say "I'm teasing you" when he's laughing at being found out. He fibs about having a "poo-bum" (his word) in order to get us to get him out of bed at night, then laughs when we discover that he was bluffing. He hides food under his plate and says "finished". No ambiguity in my mind - 2yos fib!

I think they do this at a certain age to test your reaction.
