What would be the coolest present for a 14 year old girl?

The kind of present that most of her peers would think of as cool and that the popular girls would be jealous of! I'm an author doing some research so my books for young people are realistic... I wouldn't actually buy someone a present with the intention of making other people jealous!! Thanks in advance for any replies.

For mine it would be a macbook air or a designer handbag

goshdarnit · 09/04/2015 09:32

My 14 year old dd has sat and pondered, and cannot come up with anything more definitive than 'It depends on the 14 year old!! But, give them money, cos then they can choose themselves' followed by a massive eyeroll...

MyballsareSandy · 09/04/2015 09:34

I bought my 14 year olds a Polaroid camera for their birthday. A Fuji instant one where the pics come out straight away. They love it and all their friends want one

quirkydragon · 10/04/2015 09:32

Thanks Maryberryjam, I have made a note of those! Smile

Thanks ever so much for taking the time to ask a genuine 14 year old, goshdarnit - even if the response was a 14 year old eyeroll!!!

Thanks MyballsareSandy - I can see them having a lot of fun with that! It's making me think of possible scenarios already!

I don't know, but wish I did, so will be watching with interest - I have a niece about to turn 14, and would love to be the 'cool aunty'. (I can't afford a MacBook Air or designer handbag, though - for me, let alone for her!)

GetMeOut · 10/04/2015 09:41

iPhone 6

SunnyBaudelaire · 10/04/2015 09:42

a pony

turdfairynomore · 10/04/2015 09:46

My niece loved it when I bought her "cool" make up. Maybe. Lancôme juicy tube or a benefit blusher.

KoalaDownUnder · 10/04/2015 10:02

Believe it or not, my niece already has a pony and an iPhone 5s (or c, or whatever the one before 6 is...)

Maladicta · 10/04/2015 10:05

Depends on their style really, for dd it would be a pair of DMs

thecatfromjapan · 10/04/2015 10:06

Limited edition urban decay eyeshadow palette maybe?

I love the idea of the Polaroid camera, though. I think that's great.

18yearstooold · 10/04/2015 10:11

Dd, who is currently planning her 14th birthday is after tickets for a meet and greet with some you tubers -dan and phil anyone?

She also wants a dymo label maker so i'm not sure you can trust her judgement

KoalaDownUnder · 10/04/2015 10:20

OMG, I got a Dymo label maker when I was 12, was absolutely in love with it!! And I'm 41 now, mind. Grin

ragged · 10/04/2015 10:21

It depends on the social set. DD talks bout the annoying 'popular' girls and among them the right designer clothes would be amazeballs; problem is, they already have all that stuff. Whereas in DD's circle, although they do like to look good, the expensive designer names would be a passing point of comment at most.

13yo DD suggests...
Macbook by far and above (Air would be top model)
iPhone 6 would be a wannabe item (cool but not so cool).
Real Uggs (although, "they kill real sheep to make those mom!")

She hasn't suggested my idea of backstage pass (do those still happen?) with Tickets to see the right cool boy band somewhere.

Something that inspires jealousy in DD's social set is going places by yourself, being given freedom by parents to go to town or go to the city or stay at home alone all day. Having house to self when you're a teen is nirvana (I remember that, too).

thecatfromjapan · 10/04/2015 10:57

Grin To the meet and greet with you tubers!!
My little one is a young teen and we tried to get her tickets for some you tubers event - not even Zoella! Someone smaller - and it was impossible. Gold dust doesn't come close!
What is it with these you tubers?

Lancelottie · 10/04/2015 11:10

Last year's big hit with 13-yr-old DD was...

...a very old mechanical typewriter. Squeals of 'OMG you can actually like put the ribbony thing in and see it hitting it!' from her frankly bonkers friends. We have little wonkily typewritten messages all over the house in two different faded shades of ink.

This year she wants a puppy. Oh dear.

ragged · 10/04/2015 12:35

omg, DD would DIE if she could meet Dan & Phil in person. I don't know if her mates would be jealous, but she wouldn't much care what they thought, anyway.

ragged · 10/04/2015 12:37

For bookish set this book was a huge hit among yr8s.

2fat4that · 12/04/2015 11:30

Dd just turned 14 and what she would like more than anything would be the best Mac book! Sorry, I'm not familiar with models etc, but basically the best Apple laptop out there!

She'd also love a poleroid camera, or an expensive camera that is still quite small, but takes great photos.

Also a massive box of Lush products - I think they do a gift box for over £100!

2fat4that · 12/04/2015 11:34

Oh yes, tickets to see Dan and Phil were on her wish list. She'd also love to go to comicon. And she adores Zoella ..

thecatfromjapan · 12/04/2015 11:44

I've promised dd a day-trip to Brighton to check out Zoella-related things.

thecatfromjapan · 12/04/2015 11:47

Not quite a birthday present but it was offered in amongst all the birthday stuff. It's a bit weird, though, isn't it? Hope I'm not inadvertently training her in being a stalker.

2fat4that · 12/04/2015 13:05

It's very weird Shock I guess it's their version of the crushes we had on pop stars?
