18 wk old trying to suffocate himself

Someone please explain to me why my 18 wk old is intent on pulling his bib/blankets/towels/toys over his face and leaving them there until he is gasping for breath? It really isn't funny, although when we remove said items, he laughs at us? - Thought it was because he was teething but he seems to be actually purposely doing it - I have never shared the joke with him, so why isn't he getting bored?

Probably because it's fun. He probably is doing it on purpose; he's playing a game - he covers his face and you disappear, you uncover him and you're there again and it's funny ... it's like playing peepo.

He has no idea that you don't find it funny, and he also has no idea that you think he could hurt himself. He's just found a lovely game that he can do all by himself, and that you could join in with if you wanted to so that he plays it safely.

We have played peekaboo in the past with him - maybe it does stem from there - thing is WigWamBam, he doesn't have to see us before he does it - we can put him down for a nap or his quiet time and he can be perfectly still and peaceful for a good while, then suddenly, you will hear him snuffling and thrashing, when you rush to his cot, he has covered his head! I have put him in a sleeping bag for the nights because obviously if I am asleep, I can't watch him that much, but it really is getting a tad worrying - we play with him all of the time, different games and things, so I don't think he is bored - unless it is a comfort thing and the smile is just a hello - he always smiles, he is a smiley baby. He might be giggling at the look on my worried face!

hi emstomat, my DD3 does exactly the same thing shes 7 months now and has done it for ages....scary isnt it? you might find as he gets more mobile that he stuffs his face into the cot bumper as well!!! wait for that one! some babies just like the closeness of something on their face...dont know why tho!

It really is scary!!!!! He is snuggled now where I can see him, bib half way over his mouth and toy girraffe sitting on his head - I have cleared his air ways, but if I clear his face, he would actually wake up!
Bizarre! - Actually quite nervous about moving him into his nursery in the next couple of weeks - mind you, I don't suppose you sleep much now until they leave home!

Some LOs really do just like having something on their faces. Ds, from as soon as he wasa ble to, would sleep face down with his face in his bear's lap. Difficult to see how they don't suffocate! Your ds is getting to the age when he will be able to clear things off his face, or move his head away, if they disturb his breathing, so you won't need to worry when he moves into his iwn room. Just make sure that none of the things in or near his cot have fluffy srufaces (short pile is fine) or long ties.

Thank you PrettyCandles. His favourite toy is a giraffe blankie, which is banned from his cot for the night time because of his antics!!!!
He is so damn cute!!!!!!!!! - My baby, not the giraffe blankie!

PML at the giraffe on his head!! bless him!! prettycandles is right tho, he will be able to push it off if he gets into trouble. just for the record, im 37 and my mum stills worries!

Ems - my 15 week old DS is exactly the same - this morning I was in the shower and I could see him in his crib - his toy monkey was on his head and DS was completely still - I had to get out of the shower (dripping wet) just to check he was ok!! But he does it with anything - sheets, blankets, muslin squares as well as toys.

DD (23weeks) regularly sleeps with her bunny rabbit on her face. I must be a terrible mother 'cause I don't worry. She's the one that puts is there, she'll move it if she needs to.

My 12 week DD likes to puke onto muslins and bibs and then shove them in his mouth. It's so gross!!

Newsflash! My monkey is fast asleep now with guess what - his giraffe stuck to his face!
Another quite annoying little habit he has gotten into, includes waiting until a fresh nappy and clean bottom is given to him - and then, don't you know, he fills it!!!!!!! Explain that one, surely he doesn't think thats a game!!!!!!!!!

Iy's the hoicking up of his legs abnd curling him over that triggers the poo. Whern any of ours are constipated or windy we do that to help them release it.

My son is 8 months now and still does the covering his face thing. He does it and then flaps his arms and legs about until we pull whatever it is off or he does it himself (he's just realised he can do that).
He does it with blankets, bib's, clothes, anything!!!! And he loves it!
Was worried at first but now it is a game between us!
