DS (8), want sto know how babies are made. He knows all about gestation, periods and birth but not about the deed itself and conception. I find this absolutely terrifying and would very much appreciate some advice re what books to recommend or sites to show or anything at all really. Help please!

Even if you tell your 4 yr old now be prepared for them to have forgotten by the time they are 8, you may have to explain it all again.

I was given a Clare Rayner (however you spell it) book about aged 5 or so - it said that a mans penis "stands to attention" like a soldier and then the mummy and daddy lie down together and "make love" (or words to that effect). The pictures I remember were of a solider in a hat (like a royal guard) and the man and woman lying down together on what looked like a blow up lie low (the thing you take to a swimming pool), so in my kid logic I always thought you had to be a soldier to have sex and you had to do it only on a lielow. My mum always said "vagina and penis" never gave them silly names and there was never a problem with that with us as little kids. It was when adults tried to pretty up the details I got really confused. So with my kids when they ask me I'm just going to tell them What happens - after all, it's better to be honest I feel, what's the harm in telling the truth about what is natural? Especially when they're as old as 8, but of course every family/child is different, just because it's right for us doesn't mean it will be for someone else. Honesty is best though I feel.
