What is with 4yo boy lately? At what point is it not just a phase?

DS, aged nearly 4 has for the last 5-6 weeks been the biggest pain in the bum. Everything is "no", in a big shouty voice, trying to boss about "you will pick up the toy etc", having wild tantrums over the most ridiculous of things, throwing himself about and hitting the wall, throwing things lashing out/scratching at me, DH, Gran when he is disciplined, put on naughty step etc.

He never had a "terrible twos" period, so is this it, delayed and magnified? He has been known to have little blips in behaviour when he is coming down with a virus or when we phase out his asthma steriod inhaler after a bad spell but this lately is crazy.

Tonight he tidied up his toys, just like I asked whilst I ran him a bath. He did this in record time, I was really pleased with him (and told him so). He had a bath fine, then I told him 2 minutes in bath before coming out. Then when the two minutes was up, I told, him, he said "no" and threw the little tub of water at me!

I'm a big believer in the MN mantra "this too shall pass", but what if this doesn't? At what point do I have to think there is something else going on?

Thanks

Cold shower if he won't get out the bath!!

I make my 4yo re say everything nicely that he says rudely, even if it results in a meltdown, which is swiftly counteracted by time in. His phase is now passing. Your DS is flexing his muscles. Allow and hear his opinions and show respect for them, but only if he speaks nicely.
