dd2 has her pre-school boosters tomorrow - how far in advance do you tell your kids that they are going to have an injection?

I am slightly dreading it

was planning to tell her just before we leave for the docs

I always seem to handle it badly and dd1 always used to get hysterical

tips please?

Last time I introduced it casually about a day before. And took a lollipop and produced it at eaxactly the same time as the Dr did the deed so that Ds was pre-occupied with unwrapping it. (he never normally has lollipops). He barely noticed the injection.

yes tht is a very good reasnon to rarely give sweets

With my ds i told him when we were at the doctors. SAid to him had to get jags so that he could go to school like a big boy. Total nightmare, he screamed so much that he also got a toy as soon as we left the surgery. Nearly chickened out and got my mum to take him but knew when he got upset would want me.

depends on the child, i told DD as the nurse was preparing the injection. DS the same. At that age i didnt see the point of worrying them unnecessarily. We discussed it after

With bitter experience, I now realise ten seconds before-hand is plenty of notice.

Unless much older of course, but very young ones worry a lot ime.
