How to boost shy 10 year old DS confidence

DS is very shy with adults and children he doesn't know too well. It doesn't help that he really hates sport (we've really tried to encourage him over the years). He has other interests such as electronics, chess etc., but cannot seem to find other peers that are into the same things as him. I see him looking uncomfortable around a lot of his school friends. He is not short of people who like him because he is very nice, but i feel his has little in common with most of them. Any ideas on helping him feel he fits in a bit more would be welcome.

Drama did wonders for a friend of mine.
Slightly surprised school doesn't have a chess club.

Thanks. Yes it is a shame there is no chess club - hopefully there will be one at secondary. He had a big part in the school nativity and everyone was amazed how confident he was. It's strange he can't seem to transfer those skills into his real life.
