4 year old feet not really growing. Should I be concerned?

My DS is small for his age, always has been. Not massively but a few inches shorter. I am small and husband is 5ft8 but was a titch until he was 13 and then shot up (well, to 5ft8)

But DS's feet haven't grown in the longest time. At least 15 months. Possibly went up half a size for wellies but he's just put on his winter shoes after not wearing them for months and they still fit.

Does a lack of growth in feet point to any other bigger issues? Should I be worried?

How old is DS? What is his height and weight?

Boomf · 01/03/2015 23:58

It's normal

My DS is 8 and he remained a size 1 for 20 months . He went up to a size 2 last month

My dd's nearly 4 and has been the same shoe size since last summer. She's only just gone up half a size, last week - she was so happy to get new shoes. Thinking about it logically, growth has to slow down at some point - she has 10 whole shoe sizes to go before her feet are the same size as mine, and 10 or more years til they stop growing, so I guess I can expect about a whole shoe size a year-ish now?

My DD is 9 next month and still a shoe size 13. Her feet have always been tiny, her first shoes were the pram crawlers from Clarks, as they didn't have the proper walking ones in a size small enough forget! (Size 2 If i remember right)

She is just petite, how old and tall is your ds?

BertieBotts · 02/03/2015 00:18

Nah I think their feet just slow down a lot when they get a bit older. You get used to them growing out of shoes every 6 months that it's a bit of a shock.

Plus more room between sizes at this age.

DeeWe · 02/03/2015 11:01

Dd's feet didn't grow for 2 years at that age. Then they shot up a size and a half in about 6 weeks. Then didn't grow again for ages. I wouldn't worry if he's generally growing.

My children's feet don't grow steadily, more in bursts. School shoes have lasted more than a year a few times.

coppertop · 02/03/2015 11:06

My 4yr-old has had the same size feet for over a year. She's quite tall so it's probably more to do with age than height.

I come from an average size family but always had small feet. I started school aged 4 in size 4 shoes! And now am in adult size 4 (which means I can choose from the cheaper kids ranges so it has some compensations). My Mum was worried at the time, but was never advised to do anything.

My kids now both have smallish feet, but not out of the ordinary.

My eldest was in the same size shoes from the start of year R to the start of year 2 - unfortunately she never managed to keep a pair of shoes intact for longer than a term so still cost me a small fortune in start-rites. Children, and their feet, do seem to grow in spurts.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 02/03/2015 11:10

My ds is 4 and has been in the same size for nearly a year. His height's increasing but not his shoe size. I'm assuming that at some point in the next year he'll suddenly go through 2
sizes.

LadyRivers · 02/03/2015 11:11

Both my kids feet grow incredibly slowly and they are tall for their age. It's great because I only buy school shoes once a year! DD1 is 8 and a size 13 and DD2 is 5 and a size 10 and that's been since August.

Clutterbugsmum · 02/03/2015 11:49

My eldest feet grow very slowly. She normally takes a year to go up a size. And she is as tall as me, she 11 and is already 5ft I buy her age 14 trousers because she has such long legs but she has only just grown into a size 3 shoe. We do joke if she takes after my sister she going to be top heavy Grin.

My DD is 4 and a half. She has gone up only one shoe size since she was 3, from a 9 to a 10. Their feet don’t grow at neat, regular intervals, to fit in with shoe manufacturers sizes anyway, so they can be in one size for months on end, then go through several sizes very quickly. My niece who is also 4 but 3 months younger than DD went straight from a 9 to 11 (or possibly 10.5 except my sister doesn’t bother with half sizes) and never actually wore a size 10 at all, as her feet suddenly grew so fast.
