Do all children like building blocks?

Hi, sorry if this seems like an odd question, but do all children like building blocks? I have a 3yo DD who has never ever wanted to play with any sort of building blocks. We have had the mega blocks first builders since she was 1 and the Duplo creative cakes since she was 2 (we still have both) and she is not at all interested.

Our friend said from 3 onwards she may like them, but everytime I try to play with them with her she says no. I asked her this week if she liked them and she said no. I sit on the floor playing with them myself thinking she will join in, but she wont!

So my question is really, is she just still to young, or do some children just not like that sort of play at all? We are a bit short of space at the moment and they are the 2 larger things I could get rid of, but don't want to if next year she is going to love them!

TIA.

The children who play with them most (ime as an EY teacher) are the ones who construct with a purpose in mind, rather than just for the sake of constructing.

So it might be that she needs inspiring as to why she should use them, to tie in with her imaginative role play. She might not be developmentally ready for this sort of play yet, or just be busy with another sort of play.

Or she might just not be interested in construction toys. I wouldn't worry about it. My DS never liked puzzles. I didn't think anything of it.

I think in ANY toy or activity that most children like, there are bound to be exceptions, children who do NOT care for it!

Our DS had Duplo, starting with a Duplo rattle. Using the bricks he started to learn about colour, counting, and building up - and knocking down - from around the age of two.

Mega Blocks I do not like so much, as they used not to have the quality of Duplo and Lego. But they may have improved by now.

Does she like dolls, teddies, pretend tea-parties, colouring and cutting out? By three I think some kind of creative activity should be starting to engage a child.

Thank you for replying, yes she loves role play in her kitchen, doctors and her dolls and even sylvanians. Ok decision made she is obviously not a construction kind of girl!

And by three a child is plenty old enough to be starting to make 'informal' music, ideally on a full-size keyboard, or 'domestic' percussion instruments, and 'accompany' music they hear on radio or TV.

A controlled amount of suitable TV can be good; but I strongly feel TV and radio should not be on all the time! (As is the case in some households.)

My DD 2.4 couldn't give a monkeys about her mega blocks or duplo. She loves all sorts of role play and puzzles but this just isn't for her. I was considering getting her creative cakes to give her a purpose to her building but interesting to read your dd doesn't do that either

nickdrakeslovechild · 28/02/2015 10:39

I always thought it was something that all children did, so I am glad to see we are not on our own. Am going to get rid of them as she plays so well with all other items.

slightlyconfused85 the reason I got the creative cakes was to see if the cake side of it would get her interested as she plays constantly with the play kitchen and the wooden and fabric cakes we have with it, but no even cake cant get her to build.

Ds never really played with his mega blocks. At 3.5 he's just kinda started getting into duplo, but mainly so he can build a fire station for his fire trucks. We need to dismantle it overnight to get him to create it again, otherwise it just stays static.
