Prams for big babies

Hello all parents of big babies!

My 4 month old is bigger than most 12 month old (24 lbs!). I need to get a pram that will last him for at least a couple of years but he looks big in those I've tried. He's also v broad across the shoulders which means narrow is out.

Anyone suggest a type of pram (preferably parent facing) that would be roomy enough to last?

We have a bugaboo and it's good and roomy. they're supposed to last up to 4yo. and they can be rear OR forward facing.

How about a Silver Cross carriage built pram? one on Ebay . However, not that great if you need to fit it into a car.

Had a Buzz which was good size but it fell apart(dangerously) in 4 months , waiting for money back, once I get that I'll go shopping !

Any other ideas out there as well?

I have an enormous baby too. we bought a bugaboo, but the maxicosi that goes with it was way too small v quickly. also his head brushes the top of the bugaboo seat and he is only 8 months (just) i have bought a mclaren triumph now and he fits in ok, but it is for 6 onths on. you could try the mclaren techno xt.... car seats are a prob too as his shoulders dont fit in anything. we have a bebeconfort iseos, but it is crap,s o dont get that one!

Thanks! He grew out of his maxicosi carseat at 3 months - also too wide at shoulders! Is now in a giant Big Boy's seat. Glad I'm not the only one.

I understand you're problem. Even though dd2 was 7.3 lb born she gained weight quickly and was out of a carry seat by 3 months, so I had to opt for a stroller type buggy that fully reclined for the extra space and also I found the cosy toes seemed to fit well too.

We bought a Bugaboo Frog for dd2 and loved it but by 10 mths she was almost too big for it. We replaced it with a Jane Slalom. Its a great pram, very, very easy to push and lightweight and VERY wide. Our dd wil easily fit in it for a long time yet. We have even had 2 children, a 4 year old and an 18mth old in it
It does not however face backwards but does recline flat and sit very upright.

Another problem has cropped up which is we saw a silvercross pram we liked and seemed nice and big but there is no way it would fit in the back of my wee polo!

Someone told me the bebecar prams are quite tall and roomy, and also fold down a bit smaller, but I don't know whether they last. Anyone tried them?

I love my big squashy boy but he is sooooo expensive!

my mega long and tall 16m old fits comfortably in his m&p ultima. the seat is also very wide. it reclines to flat and he lies down in it and has a nice kip totally led out.

probably wouldnt fit in a polo though.
we have a volvo and it fills the boot- sorry.

mothercare urban detour. quite wide seat, fab for taller kids as well. i used one over the summer for dd2 who was 3 years old at the time, but was the size and weight of a 6 year old.

I've got a bebecar AT raider which is quite old now, but it is excellent. It has a nice wide seat and the hood can be pulled right back out of your child's way so their head doesn't brush against it. It fully reclines and is a dream to push. However it isn't rear facing although Bebecar do rear facing models, also we have to take the wheels off to fit it in the back of our VW Golf. They are quick releasing though so it's easy to do. I think it is worth looking at Bebecar as if their newer models are like the AT then they should be brilliant. My son is 17 months now and can still sleep on it completely flat with the leg rest up, and he is above average height for his age.

thats a mountain buggy you can get them on ebay as well quite often they have very big seats easily took my nearly 5 year old nephew take up to 35kg and they fold compactly

How about the mamas and papas 2 way system they come up 2nd hand pretty regulary and seem very solid. seen lots of big toddlers sitting up in them, but the pushchair lies flat for younger ones. just measured ours- in lie back its got 75cm bed length and 25cm across where shoulders would be if head at the top. I still have ours parent facing and use the lie flat quite a lot. ds is about 71 cm tall and about 20lb not looking too big for it yet.

I second the mothercare urban detour. We are on our 2nd whopper DS in it and its great, very wide and goes quite high up the back. kid sits a lot higher in it than a buggy. Also the pumped up tyres and swivel wheel make it light to push around even with a heavy child in it. There are a lot on ebay, the new ones are about £279. It doesn't seem to bother mine that neither of them could gaze at me all the time, they have more to look at facing out I think.

Second the mountain buggies. We have the "urban" model (swivel front wheel for easier use) & DS still looks small in it...He is 28 months & very tall for his age

Thanks for all that folks! sorry not to get back to you sooner, had starving baby/no sleep/needing weaning nightmare for a few weeks! Am eveil parent who has weaned at 5 months but what do you do when your 26lb 5 month old screams for more than milk and stops sleeping entrely for weeks! But that's another story.....

Your suggestions are all great! In the interests of fitting my car I am thinking of a bebecar vector but know no one who has used one so don't know if it's good, big, hardwearing etc - anyone? The urban detours are fantastic tanks and the ones I've seen wear really well, but this boy cries if facing outwards so no go!

Bebeconfort's Loola is quite wide and the seat can be forward or rear facing. The only problem is that it doesn't recline completely and is supposed to be from 6 months on, although for logistical reasons my DD was in it at 5 months and we had no problems. Length wise it might be a bit short as I had a fairly tall 3 year old in it and his legs dangled a bit, but then by the time your DS is 3 he will probably want to walk anyway.
