Pronounciation / spelling difficulties

Does anyone have any experience of this? My 11 year old DD often mispronounces a new word when she's reading and has quite poor spelling for her age. We live abroad currently and whilst my other 2 DCs (older and younger) have picked up the language and in particular the accent, she has been slower. Her teacher often says to her that she doesn't listen.

I'm having her hearing checked but just wondered if anyone has any advice or experience?

Have you considered dyslexia? Children with dyslexia have phonological processing difficulties which can make pronouncing new words difficult. It often leads to difficulties with foreign languages and always impacts spelling. In my experience girls are often picked up on later and they can using coping strategies to hide it more. Look at the British Dyslexia Association website for more information to see if you think this could explain it

Also dyslexic children are often labelled as poor listeners when actually they are listening but their working memory problems cause them to forget things

Hopeful83, thank you! I have been wondering this for a while but almost felt like I needed someone to suggest it. She does read well and loves it. I've also asked her before if words are jumbled sometimes and she says no. As I know nothing about dyslexia, I thought maybe I was fussing unnecessarily. Will have a look at British Dyslexia Association thanks.
