My 12yr old son is struggling with social skills and peer interactions. He is an only child and his father and I are divorced. He is also finding it difficult to not shout out and disrupt other children in his class, I am looking for ideas on how to help him

Does he go to any groups such as sport or music? Or a youth club type thing? In school situations you can hide in the work and pretend not to worry about the social bit but particularly in a team / group scenario he would have to work with the other kids so that might help.

Have you talked to his form tutor / head of year? They may have another perspective or some insight and also may be able to suggest some ways to help him.

I wouldn't panic though - a lot of kids this age and older struggle!

As for the shouting out / disruption will he talk to you properly about it? Is it for attention? Is it his way of trying to fit in? i.e. Being a naughty kid / trying to make the others laugh? If so maybe talk to him about a different time to try to make others laugh - not lesson time!

If you think the social stuff and the shouting out are however signs of something else then I'd talk to his form head of year as she or he will be able to advise you.
