Help, ds wont talk

I didn't think there was much of a problem til we went for his 24-30 month development check, then the hv whipped out a book and expected him to tell her what all the pictures in the book are. He knows what they are but just wont say the words. He does say things like, mumma, dadda, brother, nanna, grandad, homer, bart ( he likes the simpsons) etc, but the hv didnt think this was adequate. Now i'm worried as i just thought this was normal, now they want to refer him to speach therapist Am i worrying bout nothing???

Given that he can say some words and if you know that he is understanding a lot more I personally wouldn't worry. Can he follow some instructions that you give him?

it is probably a good idea to have him checked out by a speech therapist but some children do take a lot longer than others- it just takes longer for it all to click into place. Do you have any concerns about his understanding? Can he communicate to you using other sounds/expressions/pointing etc?

I'm sure there will be other Mnetters who can reassure you that their children were the same.

Most children do talk more by that age but not all do. my nephew for example didn't say much more than your ds until he was 2 1/2. My SIL HV also was worried but all of a sudden when his little sister began to talk he started talking too and he didn't need speech therapy. However a boy I used to childmind has profound verbal dyspraxia and he did need the help with his speech.

I wouldn't worry about it personally if you don't think there's a problem .. but I'd take the SALT referral .. it can't hurt .. and it'll take up to a year anyway .. all they'll do is assess

I wouldn't worry, but if they're offering a speech therapist, I would definitely take them up on it - if there's no problem then you don't lose anything, but if there were a problem, then it is good to be seen sooner rather than later, and I think speech therapy is quite hard to come by!

My dh didn't speak at all till he was 3, then started in complete sentences.

THANKS. When the HV saw him she did say how intelligent she thought he was and she also commented that she thought he did not have a very good attention span, which i dis-agreed with, we was there for nearly and hour, i know i was fed up by the end of it so he must have been after bout 10 mins. He does generally chat to himself and trys to sing along with dora the explorer, which he has only just started to do.
