Two year olds and puzzles.

My 2 year old had always been on the slow to do things list in all areas of development. Physical, Social, Emotional, and Language development are all considered to be at the late end of the scale according to the paeds...he has a devel assessment for intellectual in a weeks time. I keep getting told and reading not to worry about him as long as there is one area which he is on target for...anyway I think he is good at puzzles but dont have anyone to compare with, I dont think it is necessarily something he is ahead on but I think he may actually be pretty good at them.
What sort of puzzles can your 2yr old do (he is just 2 by the way) Thanks in advance.

that does help sittingbull, he couldnt do a 16-20 piece puzzle of the square pieces with tabs type. He can do 10-12 piece puzzles of things he recognises eg a cat, dinosaur, bananas in pajamas (not peg type but large chunky peices that fit together iykwim.

YM, sounds as though he's great at puzzles. My dd couldn't (or wouldn't, wasn't very interested) really do more than 2 or 3 piece ones on her own at 2, and suddenly started doing the 20 piece ones at somewhere between 2.5 and 3 but she often gives up half way through. She's ahead with some things (esp language) but puzzles? Nope!

My DD (will be 2 on 3 Nov) can do 2-piece puzzles on her own and 3 - 4 piece ones with a little help. I've never tried any others yet.

I think puzzles, like a lot of areas of development are something where there is just a 'click' and suddenly they seem able to do them with ease, having been incapable the week before.

I remember also being worried that dd just didn't seem to get anywhere with them, but then it seemed like overnight she could just do them. Try not to worry.

dd2 is 21 months and can do puzzles with up to about 6 pieces on her own

My DS (2.4) is doing 15 - 20 piece large floor puzzles. But he also loves counting, so seems to have a very logical mind. He just started doing this size puzzle around his 2nd birthday.

Dd only got into puzzles at 3. So IME, your ds is way ahead!

My DS at 3.5 is considered to be quite bright but hasn't got a clue when it comes to puzzles. Could just about manage a 24 piece one now - but might need some help so sounds to me like your ds is doing well at them.

My dd was HOPELESS at puzzles - and still is, at 10! My ds, who's now 5 can do 24/30 piece puzzles by himself if he's done them before, but needs help with new ones. Don't know if that helps, but at least it's extra data!

My DS is just over three and generally delayed (very little speech) yet can do a 50 piece puzzkle that slaughters his older brothers

I really don't think puzzles are much of a judge TBH

DD is 3.1 and seems good at puzzles. She can do thirty piece ones and today, did most of a 60 piece non-cartoon (more like a painting with Thomas in) herself. She is much better than ds 4.4. I think it's a patience/concentration thing too. DS won't sit still long enough to do a puzzle with lots of pieces, although he loves counting and numbers. hth

my ds 2.5 can do five puzzles at the same time.....but he has to know them, when given a new puzzle it takes time and lots of consideration before he gets the peice in the right place. Good luck yawning.

My dd is 2.6 and she is pretty bad at puzzles. She is neither interested nor good at them. They usually get thrown in frustration so I don't bring them out if I can avoid it as it only ends in tears. However, she is good in other areas so I hope this means your ds has found his strength in this logical puzzle solving area.
